State 2: Supervisor Review: The employee has submitted the self-review and the supervisor has received the review notification. The supervisor chooses to view the review. The workflow provides the information about the review to the application. The supervisor provides any changes. The supervisor either approves or requests further information. If the supervisor approves, then the state changes to Supervisor Approved. If the supervisor requests additional information, then the state changes to Return to Employee. State 3: Supervisor Approved: The supervisor has approved the review. An e-mail is sent to the employee telling the employee the review has been approved. The current approver for the review is set to the employee. The workflow provides the application with information about the review. The employee either signs the review or doesn t sign. The state changes to either Employee Approved or Employee Disapproved. State 4: Return to Employee: The supervisor has asked the employee for more information. An e-mail is sent to the employee requesting additional information. The employee is the approver of the review. The employee provides additional information and sends it back to the supervisor for review. The state is changed to Supervisor Review. State 5: Employee Approved: The employee has approved the review. The date and time are recorded. The status is changed to Completed. The current approver is set to HR. The state is changed to Workflow Complete. State 6: Employee Disapproved: The employee has disapproved the review. The status is changed to Not Approved. An e-mail notification is sent to human resources. The state is changed to Workflow Complete.

The Employee Performance Review (EPR) system will be an ASP.NET application that uses a workflow created with WF. Both the ASP.NET application and the workflow will use a SQL Server database called EPR. The workflow will also use the SQLPersistenceService database that will be used to keep persistence information about the workflow. You ll create both the ASP.NET application and the workflow using VB. Finally, the workflow will use the SendEmail and ExecuteSQL activities that were created in 8. Following are the steps that will be taken to develop this application: 1. Create the EPR database and the necessary tables. 2. Create the SQLPersistenceService SQL Server database. 3. Create a new ASP .NET Web site. 4. Build all ASP .NET Web pages that don t interact with the workflow. 5. Build the complete workflow and test with a simple console application first. 6. Connect the ASP .NET Web pages and the workflow together.

Of course, these tasks are rather high level, but they give you an idea of what needs to be completed to build this application. The completed application has been provided in the code samples with this book (you can download the samples from Source Code/Download area of the Apress Web site at http://www.apress.com).

The first task to be completed is to create the EPR database. Nothing special needs to be done when creating this database; simply create a new SQL Server database called EPR. After the database is created, you must add a new SQL Server login. Both the Web application and the workflow will use this to communicate with the SQL Server. Click the Security folder on the database server, right-click Logins, and choose New Login. When the Login-New window appears, enter EPRUser as the Login Name and choose SQL Server authentication. Enter EmployeeReview99 as the password (or you can use your own just remember what it is). Choose EPR as the Default Database and click the User Mapping link on the left. Click the check box next to EPR to map the login to the EPR database, and click OK. The next step is to create the necessary tables. The following tables will be included: tblDepartment: Lists all the departments within the organization tblEmployees: Lists all the employees within the organization tblLocation: Lists all the employee locations within the organization tblQuestions: Lists the questions to be asked during the review tblReview: Main table that holds all reviews tblReviewGoal: Holds the goals for each review tblReviewQuestion: Links the Review and Questions tables together and provides the response to each question This list was determined by looking at the business process and the flow chart of the process, along with the description of each step in the workflow. The Employees table is needed because HR, by business process, must maintain a list of all employees. The Location and Department tables are also necessary because HR must maintain the department and location of each employee. Creating separate tables for this data makes the database in third normal form. If you aren t familiar with third normal form as it relates to database design, a number of excellent database design books are available for more information. The Questions table allows HR to create a list of questions to be used for reviews. The questions can be activated or deactivated from year to year. By storing the questions in a table and displaying them dynamically, the application becomes more flexible, as HR can control the questions. The Review table is the main table and contains information about each review that s created. This table links (via primary key and foreign key relationships) to the Employees table. The ReviewGoal table contains a list of goals for each review. The employee and supervisor can enter multiple goals for each review, so they need to be stored in a separate table. This table links (via primary key and foreign key relationships) to the Review table. Finally, the ReviewQuestion table contains a list of questions and the response to each question. For each question, the user needs to choose one of four possible answers. This table keeps a list of all the questions for a review, because there will be multiple questions per review. This table
