This chapter took you through some examples of realistic applications that use Atlas controls on the server and on the client. You began by looking at how you can do partial refreshes using the UpdatePanel control, before quickly moving into a couple of real-world use cases for ASP.NET applications, including how they can be enhanced by using Atlas. In the first case you looked at a simple but powerful task list manager. You looked at how you can use ASP .NET to build this data-driven application and then how you can use Atlas to improve the user experience, making updates cleaner and more straightforward. You saw the important design concept of Atlas that it can be used to enhance existing ASP .NET applications as unobtrusively as possible. You place new tags in parallel to your existing ones and point them at the existing ones to enable Ajax functionality, or you wrap your existing controls and markup in UpdatePanel controls to give them partial-refresh functionality. You also saw how by assigning triggers to common events such as button clicks, you can enhance the existing behavior on those events without rewriting the existing code that handles them. In addition, you looked at the excellent Atlas wiki reference application that is one of the de facto applications for Atlas. This is a huge application, so the entire code wasn t explored, but three important areas that use three different technologies that empower Ajax functionality were explored: the login functionality, the article creation functionality, and the table of contents area. It is strongly recommended that you look further into these examples using this chapter as a jumping-off point. Your ASP.NET and Atlas applications will be all the better for it!

ata is at the heart of every application. The key to providing productivity to the developer is making programming your application for data access as easy and as robust as possible. Microsoft tools, from the early days of Visual Basic, have had data binding at the core of the developer experience. The philosophy has been that data should be treated as an appliance. You plug your controls into the data, and they just work. How you achieve this is through defining your data source, pointing your controls at the data points on that data source that you want them to render and/or update, and letting the data binding engine take care of the rest. Atlas is no different. It empowers your applications to use data to provide asynchronous updates to your pages (amongst other things), including direct connections to web services directly from your client applications. This alone is huge functionality. Previously if you wanted to present data from web services to your applications, you would have to create a server-side application such as a web form and use this to consume a server-side proxy that speaks to the web service on your behalf. Now you can go directly to the web service from your browser by using some of the Atlas client-side libraries or more implicitly by using data source controls that consume the web service on your behalf and to which you bind your controls. This is important because it brings a rich experience to your web application without involving postbacks to a web server application because the data transfer occurs between the browser and the data web service, without requiring a middle tier. In this chapter, you will look at the client-side classes that are available to Atlas for managing data binding and how you can use them to build applications.
