Before moving on, you should do a bit of SQL Server configuration. Microsoft recommends that you disable the Shared Memory protocol on SQL Server 2005. Under certain stress conditions, your server could degrade in performance with this protocol enabled on the same box that BizTalk Server 2006 is running in parallel. 1. Click Start All Programs Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Configuration Tools SQL Server Configuration Manager. 2. Expand the Network Configuration node, and then click on the Protocols Node to bring up the appropriate entries in the right pane, as shown in Figure 3-6.

5. In the next dialog box, you ll be asked how you would like to deal with the missing prerequisite files (not applications). You re welcome to download the .cab file and use it in place, but I generally just select the downloadable option. Click Next to continue after you have made your selection. 6. You ll see the Summary dialog box, showing the components that will be installed, as shown in Figure 3-7. (As my installation is on a new XP box, the list is lengthy.) Click Install to begin the installation process. Be aware that the install program will want to reboot, but the process will resume on its own.
Figure 3-7. Beginning the download process 7. After the updates have been applied, the Server component will automatically install with everything else. Finally, you ll be greeted by the completion dialog box. You ll need to configure the server, so leave the Launch Configuration option checked and click Finish.
Configuring BizTalk Server on Windows XP
Because, for the purposes of this book, you are configuring BizTalk on a single PC server installation, you ll be using the Basic Configuration setting. Before you configure the server, note the following: You should empty the event log prior to configuration, as a full log will hinder the configuration. The account you ve used to log on to the server (Windows XP box) must be a member of the local admin group and must also have system admin rights on the SQL Server installation.
