The following are the contents of the robot.cgi script (big thanks to Erin Scott for whipping this up): #!/usr/bin/perl -w $htaccess = "/home/alt229/www/.htaccess"; # needs to be the full path open (HTACCESS, ">> $htaccess") or die $!; print HTACCESS "deny from $ENV{REMOTE_ADDR}\n"; close (HTACCESS); Another benefit to this script is that it stops robots from crawling your site before they download anything more than your front page. If you have other domains that are using Apache s mod_rewrite module in the root of your web folder, they will also be inaccessible by the bad robot s IP address. Ninety-nine percent of the time, this is preferable.

You can provide access to directories based on passwords in a variety of manners, including using Kerberos, mod_auth, ldap, or the .htaccess file. The .htaccess file is common when dealing with web hosting environments and when creating files using scripts to control access to directories and files. When using .htaccess and .htpasswd files, you are building simple text files that control certain permissions of files. An .htaccess file is a simple ASCII text file that allows administrators to personalize error pages, password-protect directories, and redirect traffic. The .htaccess file is stored in your main site directory and/or in any subdirectory that you want to protect. You can use a regular text editor such as Notepad, SimpleText, vi, or pico to create and edit an .htaccess file. Not all web hosts will support .htaccess files, so you should consult your hosting administrator if you are in a shared hosting environment. .htaccess files will also not be available if you are running Apache on Windows.

Although the .htaccess file can be stored in the main site directory, or any of the subdirectories, the commands in the .htaccess file will directly affect the directory and any subdirectories it is in. If it is stored in your main directory, it will affect the whole site. If it is stored in a subdirectory, it will affect only the files in that subdirectory. Each file in a directory is affected by the most

immediate .htaccess file available, the folder itself, or the directories above it. The same is true for .htgroup and .htpasswd files. There are many ways to create an .htaccess file. You can use the mkdir shell command to create the file. You can also create the file in Notepad or SimpleText and use an FTP program to upload the file into the proper directory. When you are uploading an .htaccess file, it must be created and saved in ASCII mode to avoid any initial errors when working with the file. The permissions on an .htaccess, .htgroup, or .htpasswd file should typically be 644 (RW- R-- R--). This will give the group and user read-only access to this file. For more information on reading permissions, refer to 10.

Word Wrap turned off.
Using the .htaccess File to Customize Error Codes
The .htaccess file gives you the ability to redirect visitors to a different page if they try to access an invalid page. You can use a custom error page for any type of error that corresponds with its unique error number. One of the most common, and frustrating, error codes is error 404, which means Page Not Found. The layout for this command in the .htaccess file is as follows: ErrorDocument errornumber /filename.html If you create a page called 404.html and you want to use it as your 404 error page, the command is as follows: ErrorDocument 404 /404.html If you want to keep all the error pages in a separate directory, just include the directory name in the file path like this: ErrorDocument 404 /errorpages/404.html Table 11-1 lists the most commonly used error codes.
