Figure 14-16. Metasploit opening screen This will put you at an msf> prompt. At the msf> prompt, you have a variety of commands that can be run. To access more detailed information for each command, see the help section of Metasploit. Commands include the following: cd: Changes the working directory (exactly like standard terminal commands) exit and auit: Exits the msf console info: Obtains detailed information about the exploit or payload that you are running reload: Reloads the exploits and payloads you have chosen save: Saves your configuration into ~/.msf3/config setg: Sets the global variables of Metasploit, including logging, nops, debug level, and alternate exit show: Shows the exploits, payloads, encoders, and nops available to the msfconsole (for example, show exploits or show payloads) unsetg: Clears the environmental variables set using the setg command version: Shows the version of the msfconsole being used use: Sets the exploit to be used (a list of exploits is included later in the chapter) Once you have set an exploit, you can type show payloads to see the available payloads for the exploit you will be running. You will also need to set an rhost and an lhost before launching an exploit. The rhost is the target, and the lhost is the IP address that Metasploit will tell packets used in the exploit to return to. To set an rhost, you use the set rhost command followed by the IP address of the target system, as shown here with a target of 10.10.10.2:

set rhost 10.10.10.2 To set an lhost of 10.10.10.203, you would use the following command: set lhost 10.10.10.203 Once you have set your IP addresses, it is time to set the payload, or action that will be taken. Available payloads for Mac OS X include the following: mac_osx_ppc_bind: Listens on a TCP port for connections and then executes /bin/sh redirected from the command line. osx_ppc_bind_stg: Listens for a TCP connection and then executes a second payload. osx_ppc_reverse: Connects to target and redirects to /bin/sh. osx_ppc_reverse_stg: Connects to a host and provides the ability to run a second payload. osx_ppc_reverse_nf_stg: Establishes a TCP connection to a target and then sends a nullfree payload. osx_ppc_findrecv_stg: Searches open files for a 4-byte tag sent by the attacker. Once the tag is found, it executes /bin/sh. osx_ppc_findrecv_peak_stg: The same payload as osx_ppc_findrecv_stg except it is nullfree and uses the MSG_PEEK flag. In addition to setting a payload, you should set an exploit. Common exploits for Mac OS X include the following: osx_ia32_bind: Listens for a TCP connection and then executes arkeia_type77_macos: Executes a stack overflow against the Arkeia backup software firefox_queryinterface_osx: Exploits a vulnerability in Firefox 1.5 samba_trans2open_osx: Runs a buffer overflow against Samba 2.2.0 to 2.2.8 afp_loginext: Runs a stack overflow against the AppleFileServer webstar_ftp_user: Executes a stack overflow against the WebStar FTP server smb_sniffer: Attempts to capture LanMan and NTLM passwords phpnuke_search_module: Runs a SQL injection attack against PHP Nuke 7.5 to 7.8 Next, you will need to set the target. Each payload has a specific set of targets. To see which targets are available for the payload that you have chosen, type show targets. This will open a screen of targets that can be used to exploit a system. Next, type set followed by the target number you select, for example, set target 0. Once the payload, exploit, target, and hosts have been set, it is time to launch your first exploit. Enter the command show options to review your settings, and make sure everything is set as intended. If it is, enter the exploit command to run your first exploit.
