Drupal s core code can be used to host more than one web site, known as multisite. That is, site-specific information resides in the sites folder (that is, foundationdrupal7.com from Figure 2-9), and all other core files are shared between sites. You can potentially run an unlimited number of web sites off one instance of Drupal core. Drupal s multisite feature is another reason not to modify Drupal core. If you modify Drupal core, your changes will affect all sites on the multisite installation. In a multisite setup, all domains point to a single directory on your host. When you created the cPanel account and set the domain, you configured the web server to point the domain to the public_html folder. With a multisite configuration, you park a domain to accomplish the same thing; parking a domain points the parked domain to the same folder as the cPanel account domain. When Drupal receives a request for a web page, it uses the domain to determine which sites folder to serve. Drupal discovers the configuration directory by stripping the hostname from left to right (that is, everything before the .com) and the path name from right to left (that is, everything after the .com). This gives you a wide variety of domains, subdomains, and paths that can point to unique Drupal sites, all running off the same core code but with unique configuration settings. Drupal searches the sites directory for the configuration folder name in the following order: 1. First, the entire path is used, and the hostname is stripped from left to right:

Drupal searches each configuration directory for a configuration file named settings.php and uses the first one found. This means a single domain can host a number of installations depending on how you name your directories, such as example.com, example.com/d7, dev.example.com, and more. When using a multisite configuration, themes and modules in the all/modules and all/themes directories are available across all sites. Let s say you have two sites running off a multisite configuration, foundationdrupal7.com and drupalfordesigners.com, meaning you have a site-specific directory for each. If you place a module in all/modules or a theme in all/themes, then this module or theme will be available for both foundationdrupal7.com and drupalfordesigners.com. Remember if you hack a contributed module, you should place it in the site-specific directory. If you were to place a hacked contrib module in the all/modules folder, then any changes made to that module will appear across all sites. Do not place site-specific modules or themes in the all directory if you plan to use a multisite configuration. The main benefit of using a multisite configuration is the ease of updating. During an update (such as from 7.1 to 7.2), core files and folders are updated for security or bug fixes. When each site is running its own set of core code, each site must be updated individually. A multisite configuration allows you to update all sites at once by simply copying the sites folder (which contains all site-specific information) from the old version to the new version.

Downloading and installing Drupal
By now you should have an understanding of the various files and folders in the Drupal package and how they work. In this section, the rubber meets the road and I discuss how to download, install, and configure Drupal.
Download Drupal to your host
You can download Drupal to your host in two ways: via Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP; also called SSH File Transfer Protocol) and via SSH. Each method has its pros and cons. If you ve never used the command prompt before, SFTP is by far the easiest method to load Drupal onto your host; you simply download it from Drupal.org to your machine and then upload it to your web host. This is the process to load Drupal on your host using an SFTP client: 1. 2. 3. Go to Drupal.org, and download the latest version of Drupal to your desktop. There is a link on the homepage. Decompress the files. The downloaded files have a tar.gz file format, commonly called a tarball, and require a special program such as 7-zip (7-zip.org) to decompress. Use an SFTP client such as FileZilla or Secure Shell Client to connect to your server.
4. 5.
Navigate to the web directory. This is usually located in the home directory and may be called public_html. Upload all Drupal files into this directory.
Although this process will work if you re building only one site, it can become lengthy and cumbersome if you find yourself frequently building new sites and/or adding contrib modules. My recommendation is to use an SSH client (the command prompt) to download Drupal to your host. The command prompt allows you to quickly load files from Drupal s servers to your server by typing a few lines of code. Instead of downloading the file from Drupal.org to your desktop and then to your server, you simply download it from Drupal to your host, skipping the middle step. Some of you may be scratching your head and asking, What s wrong with the first method It sounds easier. It is easy, and there s absolutely nothing wrong with it. However, there are others who are thinking, I love saving time by using the command prompt. Personally, I prefer the command prompt when downloading contrib modules because I can download and untar a module in a matter of seconds. Here is the process to load Drupal onto your server via SSH: 1. 2. Use an SSH client such as PuTTY Secure Shell Client to access your server. Navigate to the home directory where you want to install Drupal. From the command prompt, type cd ~ (if cPanel) or cd /home/username, where username is the name of the folder in which the public web folder is located. Load Drupal onto your host by typing the following, changing X to the most current Drupal version: wget http://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/drupal-7.X.tar.gz. Drupal is now saved at /home/username/drupal-7.X.tar.gz. Next, you need to untar Drupal to your public_html directory using the following: tar -zxvf drupal-7.x-dev.tar.gz -C public_html --strip=1. At this point, Drupal core is now loaded on your host. Your next step is to add a site configuration directory and then any contributed modules.
