Figure 5-7. The user registration form is accessed at http://example.com/user/register. Requiring e-mail verification removes the password from this form and e-mails a system-generated password to the user. You can add additional fields to the registration form by using the profile module, discussed in the next chapter. User accounts are deleted by clicking the People link, selecting the user(s) you want to delete, and selecting Cancel the selected user accounts from the UPDATE OPTIONS drop-down. Alternatively, you can give users the permission to cancel their own user account, meaning they can edit their account from their account page and delete it. Drupal provides a number of options if an account is cancelled, as shown in Figure 5-6. A disabled account means the account is blocked and can be activated by an admin at a future point. Additionally, the user s page cannot be accessed. Deleting an account permanently removes it from the site. If the option Disable the account and keep all content is selected, then content will remain live on the site with the user s name as the author; this is the default Drupal setting. Disable the account and unpublish all content should be used only if unpublishing the user s content will not disrupt other user s content. For example, unpublishing a blog post with comments from other users will remove those comments as well. Delete the account and keep all content is the default Drupal setting and what you will probably use if your web site allows users to register for accounts. Finally, Delete the account and all content deletes all content, including comments users have posted.

You can allow users to personalize their accounts with either a signature or a picture (see Figure 5-8). Signatures are small snippets of text added to the end of comments. They can only contain text and must have 255 characters or less. When the Enable signatures check box is selected, a text box appears on the edit user page where users can add a signature. Some modules place this signature at the end of content, such as in forums or comments.

Figure 5-8. Accounts can be personalized with signatures or pictures by navigating to Configuration Account se ttings. User pictures are enabled by default. All images are saved in the Picture directory, which Drupal will automatically create if the directory does not exist (the file directory is discussed in detail in 2). The Picture display style determines the dimensions Drupal resizes the image, which by default is 85 pixels by 85 pixels; picture display styles are discussed in further detail in 4. You will need to update the theme if you use a larger picture. The Picture upload dimensions and Picture upload file size settings are the maximum file size for the image; leaving these blank allows for an unlimited dimensions and/or size. Picture guidelines are displayed on the user edit form underneath the upload picture field, as shown in Figure 5-9.

Drupal sends out a number of emails during the account registration and cancellation process. The text of each email is customizable and allows for a number of variables to be inserted into both the subject and body. See Tables 5-1 and 5-2 for more information. Table 5-1.
