I ll start with the PATTERNS tab because there are several topics I need to cover first before moving to general and punctuation SETTINGS. Click the NODE PATHS link to view URL replacement patterns for all content types, as shown in Figure 7-2. You can set both the Default path pattern and the content-type specific pattern from this fieldset. All system content types are listed on this page and are blank by default; if a content type does not have a pattern, then it displays the Default path pattern. Click the REPLACEMENT PATTERNS link to view a list of tokens that automatically generate values depending on the node. These are placed into the fields above (such as Default path pattern) and include a number of values, such as the node s ID, content type, taxonomy term, created date, and more. The Internal feed alias te x t setting is used to generate aliases to specific nodes RSS feeds. When building and managing a site, there are times when you create nodes before configuring Pathauto. Selecting BULK UPDATE tab to automatically create URLs for each node without an alias upon save. There are also times when you make configuration changes to Pathauto and you want to update all old URLs to the new path pattern. The easiest way to do this is to click the DELETE ALIASES tab, delete all the content aliases, and then go back and Select the types of un-aliased paths for which to generate URL aliases from the BULK UPDATE tab. I do not recommend doing this on production sites, because Drupal does not save the aliases after they are deleted, and if users or search engines try to access a page, they will receive a 404 not found error. There are a number of settings under general settings; click the SETTINGS tab to view all of them. The V erbose check box determines whether a message will be displayed when saving a node, taxonomy term, or user and when the URL is changed, as shown in Figure 7-3. This usually happens when, for example, a path pattern is based on the node title (for example, http://example.com/gallery/[node:title]) and the title is changed during a save. The Separator setting is the Unicode character placed between words in titles, including both spaces and punctuation such as colons or apostrophes. Generally speaking, I tend to use a hyphen so I can optimize my site for Google. This requires a bit of an explanation. When doing a search on Google for hello world (with a space), Google returns sites with both spaces and hyphens in the domain and page title. However, do a search for hello_world (with an underscore), and Google returns sites with the underscore; it does not return any sites with dashes or spaces. If you want people to find your page on the Internet by searching Google using hello world, then it s best to use a hyphen. However, there are times when it s important for an underscore to appear in search results, such as when people search specifically for hello_world. By

default, Pathauto removes any underscores from the URL. If underscores are important to you, I recommend clicking the PUNCTUATION link at the bottom of the page and selecting No action (do not replace) for Underscore _. Character case determines whether Drupal changes a replacement pattern to lowercase or keeps it as the same.

Maximum alias length is the maximum length of a generated URL, which is capped at 255. The Maximum component length setting is the maximum length of any replacement pattern, such as the [node:nid]. I usually leave these at their default settings.

Update action determines what happens when a node is saved and a replacement pattern is changed, such as the [node:title]. By default, Pathauto is set to create a new alias and delete the old. As explained in the previous section, I do not recommend changing URL paths after a site has gone into production. You could change this to create a new alias and leave the existing alias functioning, basically creating two URLs to access the same node. The issue with this is that a search engine may penalize your search rankings if it finds duplicate content on your site.
