This chapter was contributed by Stephanie Pakrul. In this chapter, we will cover how to create a theme for your Drupal site. Theming in Drupal is very powerful; it s not just a matter of creating a "skin" for your website. You have precise control over the User Interface (UI) and where your data fields are placed. The Fusion theme, discussed in this chapter, is a point-and-click solution for managing the theme in your site. Fusion also helps with one of the most challenging things when you're first working with Drupal: understanding the dividing lines between content, configuration, and theming. We'll walk through some specific examples from start to finish and leave you with the tools you need to find more information about various theming topics.

A Drupal site without content is kind of like an uninflated balloon. Once you have a bit of content to play with, then you can place it into regions to make the layout come to life, create views to list data in different ways, and create new sections or pages to link to from your menus. If you re working on a brand new site, before you continue with configuring your layout and styles, step away from the theme for a bit and think about the content that s going to be on your site. Maybe you re going to have some news items on your front page, so you d first want to add some Article nodes (even if they re just dummy text for now!). Perhaps you have an About us page or contact form that needs to be added to your Primary links menu. Maybe you know you re going to have some text blocks listing your product s top features, or your company address, or showing the latest comments on the site. Or maybe something requiring additional Drupal modules, like an image gallery or video blog.

Tip: Often you need to build a Drupal site without having real content ready to go. There are tools to help! Visit lipsum.com to generate dummy text content and dummyimage.com to create dummy images. The Devel module (http://drupal.org/project/devel) also comes with a Devel Generate sub-module that can automatically create dummy content for your site. Whatever it is that your site will be, the next steps will go much more smoothly (and be a lot more fun!) if you get this functionality and some content in place first before you start theming.

In this chapter we will be using Fusion, one of the most popular base themes for Drupal. Other popular Drupal base themes you may run into include Zen, Framework, and Basic. Each has its own approach, and you may want to check them out once you get a handle on how theming works in Drupal. We'll create a subtheme of Fusion, which inherits all the features and base code from Fusion itself. Fusion also includes a commented starter theme that we'll edit to create the custom look and feel for this theme.

Download Fusion core from http://drupal.org/project/fusion and place it in your themes folder (usually sites/all/themes you may need to create this folder). Alternatively, you can install Fusion through Drupal's UI, similar to modules. Go to Appearance and click the Install new theme and follow the steps on screen. Refer to the first section of 7: Essential Contributed Modules for instructions on how to install a theme/module. Similar to core and contributed modules, Drupal themes can have a primary and sub-theme, including Fusion. A primary theme can often be used as a core theme, so that multiple sub-themes can inherit various templates and theme settings from the primary theme. This is ideal if you want to build sites using a starter theme, so that all sub-themes can share properties and you don t have to spend time re-writing the same code. You ll need the core theme installed, such as Fusion Core, for the sub-theme to work.
