We'll be using the Vibe theme (Figure 8-1) as our example throughout this chapter. The Vibe theme is a sub-theme of Fusion and is perfect to show how Fusion works. It can be downloaded free at http://drupal.org/project/vibe.

The Skinr module is used to provide an interface for much of Fusion's settings. It is not required for our first steps, but we'll be using it shortly. It allows you to apply graphic "skins" to certain parts of your site, such as blocks or regions. Usually a site's design will have different visual styles for different parts of the site, so you can use Skinr to set these styles through Drupal's interface rather than hard-coding (ie. editing CSS files) them to parts of the site within the theme. Skinr is available for download at http://drupal.org/project/skinr. Refer to 6 for instructions on how to install a module.

First we'll plan the layout of our theme. It's important to figure out what kind of content goes where, so we know how to build the structure of our theme in Drupal. Then we will configure the basic layout settings, position our content, and start theming through clicking and code!

Some elements of the page in Figure 8-1 above are pretty obvious to pick out there's a logo, menu, and a search box. But when you get down to blocks and regions, things can get a little more confusing. One of the most important things to understand when setting up your theme's layout is how blocks and regions work. Regions are containers, and blocks are content that go inside regions. In this case, we have two sidebars, with a wider middle column for our main site content. The sidebars and content columns are regions, and there can be multiple blocks inside those regions. If you don t put any blocks inside any of these regions, the region will not be displayed. There are also elements here that aren't blocks, like the logo, which are configured and displayed through the theme. In the next steps, we'll configure the basic theme settings and then adjust the layout of the sidebars and blocks.

Theme settings
Visit the theme settings page for your theme to enable or disable basic settings, such as your site s name, logo, and slogan. You can access this settings page by clicking Appearance in the toolbar, and then click the Settings link next to your current theme. Thinking about the design you will be turning into a Drupal theme, enable the theme settings that make sense for your site. Will you be displaying a graphical logo or other header image in the theme If so, you probably want to check the "logo" option for your theme. Similarly, check the other options you want to use, like a text-based site name, slogan, or a shortcut icon ("favicon").
Working with the grid layout
Fusion is a grid theme. You may have heard of CSS grids, such as 960gs or YUI. They re a great way to give your design a professional and tidy look, and they eliminate a lot of decision making and hand tweaking by giving you a standard set of layout choices. Grids also take care of common cross-browser issues when dealing with layout, especially in older web browsers like Internet Explorer 6 and 7. Fusion is based on these grid systems, and allows you to lay out your theme very easily from Drupal's UI, or even to create custom grid definitions. (http://fusiondrupalthemes.com/support/theme-developers/grid-concepts) Grids can be any size or number of columns, but widths such as 960 and 980 pixels are common, because they are nicely divisible and fit on the still-common 1024px wide screen resolution. This is where the 960gs Grid System gets its name. It most frequently uses a 12 or 16 column grid, but 24 columns is also popular. We don't need to get too far into the technical details, but another term to be familiar with is "gutters" the margin of space in between columns. Fusion's gutters are 20px by default, but you can override these in your subtheme if necessary. Figure 8-2 shows an example of a web site with a translucent pink overlay showing where the grid columns fall. A similar overlay is available as a setting you can toggle on in any Fusion theme.
