Although this isn t necessary for pixel-perfect lines and shapes, I highly recommend setting Rulers and Type to pixels. Web browsers display images using pixels, so this setting will help during the design process. As shown in Figure 9-10, navigate to Edit Preferences Units & Rulers, and select pixels for both Rulers and Type.

Figure 9-11. Select the Snap to Pixels check box in the options toolbar to create pixel-perfect rectangles or rounded rectangles. There is no option to snap lines to pixels. Rather, you must select View Actual Pixels and then create a line (or select 100 percent in the Navigator window). Overall, creating a line when the view is greater or less than 100 percent results in fuzzy lines.

Figure 9-14. Open the View menu, and select Pixel Preview. Snap to Pixel must be enabled when creating shapes. There are a few simple steps you must follow to create a pixel-perfect shape: 1. 2. Create the shape, making sure Snap to Pixel is enabled. Align the shape s stroke to the inside or outside. Note that in earlier versions of Illustrator, you ll need to set the stroke weight to 0.999 px, as shown in Figure 9-15; otherwise, the top line will come out fuzzy.

Figure 9-15. In older versions of Illustrator, you may need to set the stroke weight to to 0.999 px; otherwise, the top line will come out fuzzy.
Creating a line is a similar process: 1. 2. 3. Create the line, making sure Snap to Pixel is enabled. If the stroke weight is an even number, you are finished. If it is an odd number, disable Snap to Pixel. Use the arrow key to nudge the line in the appropriate direction.
Slicing, optimizing, and saving web site images
The file looks great, and you re ready to save JPEGs, GIFs, and PNGs to the files directory in your Zen subtheme. Slicing your file in Photoshop or Illustrator gives you a quick and easy method to name and save all (or just one) required images at once in a single directory. This section takes you through the process of using the Slice tool, optimizing images, and saving images.
Using the Slice and Slice Select tools
The Slice and Slice Select tools, available in both Photoshop and Illustrator, allow you to slice the file into multiple areas to create separate image files when saving for the Web. Slicing a file is a simple process of using the Slice tool to draw boxes around page elements, while the Slice Select tool is used to adjust the size of the box. When slicing a file, Photoshop and Illustrator automatically divide the file into multiple slices (see Figure 9-16).
Figure 9-16. The Slice and Slice Select tools slice the file into multiple areas used when saving images for the Web. Image used by permission of Ken Lawrence of KRLCorp.com. While slicing a file takes experience, there is a general process used to slice a file: 1. Use the Slice tool to draw a box around the header. Photoshop and Illustrator automatically divide the remainder of the file into multiple slices.
