Was the database imported Navigate to http://example.com/install.php to see whether Drupal will try to install. If it does, it s usually a good sign that data does not exist in the database (however, see the install.php problem later in this table). You can also log in to cPanel and navigate to the MySQL Databases page to see the size of the database. Sometimes a database will not fully import and will give similar messages. Log in to phpMyAdmin, and ensure the number of tables in your staging site matches the number of tables in your source site.

We discussed how to create a staging site in the previous section so you can have two copies of the same site one for dev (http://exampledev.com) and one for prod (http://test.example.com). In this section, I discuss changes you ll need to make to http://test.example.com before going live and then how to move http://test.example.com to http://example.com.

All data for enabling and configuring modules is saved in the database, meaning any changes made to test will not be reflected in dev. The first few steps to prepare your site were discussed in detail earlier. 1. Go to the Modules page, and disable all the nonessential modules, including developer tools and any other unused modules (see Figure 10-12). Enable any modules required for production, such as Google Analytics.
Figure 10-12. Disable all nonessential modules and enable modules required for production. 2. Navigate to People and change the password for user #1 and any other developer accounts (see Figure 10-13).
Figure 10-13. Change the password for user #1 and any other developer accounts. 3. Enable performance caching at Configuration Performance (see Figure 10-14). Note that if this breaks the test site, you should go back to the dev site and fix it.

Moving the test site to production
By this point, http://test.example.com should be ready for production. In cPanel, the public_html folder is usually reserved for files available on the Internet (aka web sites). The easiest way to move the test site to production is to delete or rename the public_html folder and create a symlink that points to ~/test. 1. Rename the public_html folder (see Figure 10-16).
Figure 10-16. Rename the public_html folder. 2. Create a symlink that creates a public_html folder pointing to ~/test (see Figure 10-17).
Figure 10-17. Create a symlink pointing to ~/test.
GOING LIVE
Log in to cPanel, and delete the subdomain http://test.example.com.
Using steps 1 and 2, you can easily point public_html to any folder in your home directory.
Summary
In this chapter, I reviewed the process of preparing a Drupal site for production. I discussed building a staging environment and the need for multiple versions of a site, minimally dev and prod, allowing you to have one version with a set of developer tools enabled and another version for production. I walked you through a step-by-step tutorial to copy a Drupal site using cPanel and SSH and created a test site available at http://test.example.com. I closed the chapter with a few simple steps required to move the test site to production.
