The statistics module provides you with a number of reports about the usage patterns of users, including Recent hits, Top referrers, Top pages, and Top visitors. The Recent hits report contains all access logs recorded by the module, such as page, user, and time. The remaining three reports provide you with an overview of the access logs. The search module provides you with a report of top search phrases. If you are serious about viewing and understanding usage trends, I recommend using the Google Analytics module, available at http://drupal.org/project/google_analytics. Google Analytics gives you a number of advanced analytical and reporting options not available with Drupal. You enable the statistics module at the Modules page, and you configure it at Configuration Statistics, as shown in Figure 11-5. You will need to select Enable access log from the configuration form for the module to work. I recommend adjusting the field discard access logs older than, depending on the amount of traffic to your site. On a heavily visited site, the access log will grow quickly; the statistics module adds one entry to the log every time a user visits a page. If your site has 100 visitors a day viewing an average of 10 pages per visitor, this adds 1,000 entries to the log every day; setting Discard access logs older than to the maximum setting (three months and three weeks) could easily

Figure 11-5. Statistics module configuration options, accessed at Configuration Statistics Selecting Count content views enables a counter on every piece of content that displays the number of times a node has been viewed. Permission must be given to users to view the counter. Note that the statistics module adds one additional database call per page displayed, resulting in an increased load on the server. Disabling this module may help increase the performance of your site for users.

Site health refers to a number of factors, including error messages, access denied messages, and page not found messages. The Recent log entries report contains a list of all system messages added to the log, including access denied messages, content creation messages, PHP error messages, and more (see Figure 11-6). Additionally, the list of entries can be filtered by both message type and severity. Two reports, top access denied errors and top page not found errors, provide you with a quick report of the most common errors. You will want to frequently check these reports. The top access denied

MAINTAINING AND UPDATING A DRUPAL SITE
Understanding the update process
Updating a site in Drupal has always been a notoriously time-consuming process, especially for people new to Drupal. Readers familiar with Joomla or WordPress are probably familiar with the one-click update process that does everything for you. Until Drupal 7, Drupal has never had a front-end UI to help with updates; the process has always involved manually moving files and database dumps. Starting with Drupal 7, the Update Manager module is Drupal s core UI for allowing users with the Run software updates setting enabled to manage updates through the admin interface. Currently, the module is limited in functionality but will someday have the ability to update core and contributed modules by simply clicking a button. The goal of this section is to talk through the process of updating a site, whether through the UI or via SSH, so you can understand what happens (and needs to happen!) during an update. The process itself is rather simple: 1. 2. Create a test site, which is basically a clone of your production site, as covered in 10. On this test site, delete outdated modules, and replace them with the most current version. Drupal allows you do to this through the UI.
Updates are an important reason why you should never haxxor a module: it makes it difficult to update. If you hack a module, make sure to create a patch so that when you upgrade, you can apply the patch to the module to restore your previous hacks. The patch may not always apply, because code in the module may have changed, but having the patch around will help you understand the reason for the change in the first place.
3. 4.
Run the update.php script by navigating to http://example.com/update.php. If the update was successful, put your production site in maintenance mode, and follow the same process.
