Automatic garbage collection is basically memory management. And it does exactly what the name implies: it takes out the garbage for you. (I wish I had one of these in real life just ask my wife, Shay). Okay, let s break it down: objects take up memory when they are instantiated (another fancy name for created ). Eventually, some instantiated objects will no longer be necessary. The garbage collector automatically finds and disposes of them, freeing precious memory. You can imagine how powerful this is in an application with hundreds (or even hundreds of thousands) of objects. It is worth noting here that some languages, such as C++, don t have automatic collection of garbage, so the programmer has to manually manage his/her garbage, and this can get quite cumbersome and have devastating performance effects if not done or not done properly.

Language Integrated Query (LINQ) was introduced in .NET 4.0 and it allows for context-sensitive keywords such as from, select, and where. This allows the programmer to use similar syntax for managing databases, data collections, and even XML (Extensible Markup Language).

very handy when you have many developers working on the same application, and documentation is needed to explain to the next developer how to make use of the source file. C# possesses many more powerful features, but for the scope of this book, I think I have adequately discussed some of the major ones. After all, this is a hands-on book, and I don t want to bore you with theory, but rather I m brushing over this stuff so you can get to some real development. I think at this point it would be beneficial to go over XAML.

XAML is an XML-based declarative language developed by Microsoft. XAML is basically, as I described before, the UI language of Silverlight that defines objects and their properties. I say that XAML in its basic form describes how the application looks, but it can do much more than that. The number one advantage of XAML is its speed and efficiency often, a single line of XAML can represent dozens of lines of equivalent C#. Further, with only a few lines of XAML, any Silverlight object can be hooked up to C# codebehind classes that can contain complex functionality. It is also worth mentioning that anything that can be done in XAML can also be done in C#, though usually the C++ requires many more lines of code. XAML objects are written in XML-based form and describe how the user sees the object or framework element, by setting properties in the XML. A typical XAML control looks like this: <Button x:Name="spinBtn" HorizontalAlignment="Right" Margin="0,0,19.8,42.5" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" Width="186.25" Height="80" Background="Blue" Foreground="White" Content="Spin"/> The preceding code creates a Button control. The Button is able to be referenced by C# code because it has an x:Name property set to spinBtn. As you can see, it also has other properties, such as the following:
