(named rectangle) X position. And then the next DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames moves the Rectangle in Y space. There is then a ColorAnimationUsingKeyFrames node that changes the color of the Rectangle. The next DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames changes the scale of the Rectangle s Y scale. Then the next DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames changes the Rectangle s X scale. Finally, the last Animation, a PointAnimationUsingKeyFrames, moves the Rectangle. Now that you know a little about Storyboards I would like to guide you through the development of your first Silverlight application that uses Storyboard Animations to duplication Newton s Cradle effect. If you don t know what Newton s Cradle is, go look it up on the Internet, I ll wait.
Creating the Newton s Cradle Application
Back already Good, let s fire up Blend and create Newton s Cradle using Timed Storyboard Animations!
1. In Blend click File
New Project, as I did back in Figure 5-1.
2. When the New Project dialog box appears (Figure 5-13), select Silverlight for the Project type. 3. Select the Silverlight 4 Application template. 4. Name the new Project NewtonCradle. 5. Click OK.

Now that you ve created the new Silverlight project, you need to create a re-usable UserControl that will represent the balls that hang from the strings in a Newton s Cradle device. If you have never seen a Newton s Cradle device, or don t think you have, take a look at Figure 5-14 so you have a reference of what we are going to build.

1. Select the Ellipse tool from the toolbar. 2. Hold down the Alt+Shift keys and draw an Ellipse on the artboard that is about 75 75. 3. In the Properties panel click the Fill property and then click Gradient brush, as I do in
Figure 5-15.

4. Now click the Radial gradient button as I do in Figure 5-16.

5. Select the Reverse gradient stops button, as shown in Figure 5-17.

6. Select the Gradient tool from the toolbar and adjust the gradient so it looks like what I have in
Figure 5-18.

7. Back in the Properties panel, select the Stroke property and click the No brush icon, as I
am doing in Figure 5-19.

1. From the toolbar click and hold the Ellipse tool until you see the Line tool and then click it, as I
do in Figure 5-20.

2. Hold down the Shift key to constrain the angle of your Line and draw a Line so that you have
what I have in Figure 5-21. Note: because you just created an Ellipse with a radial Fill and no Stroke, you may need to make sure your newly created Line is selected and click the No brush button for the Fill and click the Solid Color brush for the Stroke in the Properties panel. With my Line selected, my Properties panel looks like what I have in Figure 5-22 make certain yours looks the same.
