So, if innerHTML isn t the answer, what are you actually doing on the client side If you ve looked at the W3C s Load and Save specification, you would see things such as ACTION_APPEND_AS_CHILD and ACTION_REPLACE. Taconite supports these actions and others, giving you complete flexibility with content placement. Following the ideals of the Load and Save specification should make the transition from Taconite to the W3C specification easier. Taconite currently supports the following actions, assuming that the actions are in reference to a specified context element:

Appending as children Appending as first child Deleting Inserting after Inserting before Replacing children Replacing Taconite isn t a toolkit it doesn t provide widgets but it s extremely flexible. It will render whatever you throw at it, not just what some developer thought their text box should handle. Of course, if you had to have that snappy widget, it would be pretty easy to build on top of Taconite. And, with the JavaScript-based parser, it ll work with any server-side technology you want to use. Remember, since Taconite is open-source (licensed under the Apache license), you are free to look at the code to tweak it, learn from it, and even port it to your favorite language. Be sure to explore the Taconite home page (sourceforge.net/projects/taconite) for further details.

The introduction of Mac OS X Tiger saw hundreds of new features, including a new browser with improved Really Simple Syndication (RSS) support, an automation tool to simplify common tasks, and a lightning-fast desktop search capability. One of the most talked about features of Tiger is Dashboard, essentially a collection of mini-applications (see Figure 8-6). For those of you who don t own a Mac (or don t have a friend with one), think of a Dashboard application as a replacement for all those little things you normally launch a browser for several times a day, such as checking your stocks, looking up a word in the dictionary, or checking what s on TV tonight. Rather than run off to your favorite weather site, you can simply access the Dashboard and glance at your local weather forecast! Dashboard widgets are nothing more than bits of HTML and JavaScript, with a little bit of CSS mixed in for good measure. A good Dashboard widget has a single purpose and is small, doing one thing and doing it well. Mac OS X Tiger shipped with a handful of widgets (a calendar, a flight tracker, a stock tracker, a weather widget, and so on), but now more than a thousand are available. Dashboard widgets connect to the Internet to deliver real-time information; this means a single click keeps you up-to-date. The real beauty of Dashboard is that pretty much anyone can create their own widget in fact, most of the widgets available for download were not written by Apple. Unfortunately, we don t all own Macs, and at least for now, we won t be able to run Mac OS X on an Intel box. Still, that doesn t mean you can t share a bit in the features of Dashboard. In fact, in the next section, you ll use Ajax along with some freely available Web Services to mimic Dashboard in a browser.

Up to now, all the examples in this book have been small and to the point, demonstrating one or two particular topics. The examples weren t particularly flashy, but they demonstrated an important piece of the Ajax puzzle. This chapter s example, known as the Ajax Dashboard, is a completely cross-browser application that mimics the Mac OS X Tiger Dashboard feature. While this example isn t nearly as polished as its parent, it does serve as proof that Ajax is easy to use and can provide a huge leap in usability. The Ajax Dashboard also serves as a demonstration test bed for the Taconite framework, so you ll see how much work the Taconite framework can save you. The full source code for the Ajax Dashboard is available from the Source Code section of the Apress Web site (www.apress.com). From there you can download the source and also the prebuilt WAR file that is ready to run in any modern servlet container such as Tomcat.
