All emulator components are subclasses of the abstract EmulatorComponent base class (see Listing 12-3). An emulator component, which is loaded over the XML configuration file, must possess a parameterless default constructor. This constructor must perform all necessary initializations, so that the component is in a valid state, even if no further parameters are present in the configuration file for initializing the component. An emulator component can be identified uniquely with its ComponentId property. This ID must be unique within the emulator. If this property is not specified in the configuration file for a component, it will be, by default, the class name of the component followed by a random global unique ID (GUID). The ID for an emulator component can be assigned only once. A second attempt to assign an ID to the ComponentId property would result in an exception. The EmulatorComponent class possesses five virtual methods, which you can overwrite for further custom configuration. You can override the Configure method, if you require a complete custom parsing of the XML section for a component. The default implementation causes the data to be parsed by the configuration engine. Such an intervention is not necessary in most cases, since the configuration engine is already very efficient and provides a rich configuration mechanism. The SetupComponent method of a component is called after the component is loaded, initialized, and added to the emulator. The InitializeComponent method of a component is called as soon as all components are properly set up that means loaded, initialized, and added to the emulator. In the UninitializeComponent method, you can add clean-up code that will be executed when the component is no longer used, that is, after removing the component from the emulator when, for example, the emulator shuts down. The IsReplaceableBy method controls whether an already existing component in the emulator can be replaced by another component. Components can be added manually before the analysis of the configuration file if the LoadDefaultComponents method of the Emulator class is overwritten. The standard implementation of IsReplaceableBy of the EmulatorComponent class returns the value false. Most of the components provided with the .NET Micro Framework SDK permit the respective component to be replaced by another component of the same type or a subclass of it. For example, an emulator can have only one memory manager, so the memory manager created in the default implementation of LoadDefaultComponents can be replaced via the XML configuration by any component that is a memory manager or a subclass of it. With this method, you can ensure, in the setter method of a property, that the property value may not be further changed at runtime after the emulator was configured. The overloads of the Invoke method enable you to synchronize data access of emulator components within different threads. With emulators that have a graphical user interface (GUI), the GUI and the emulator run in two different threads. You will see concrete samples when discussing the various emulator components.
