Most of the earthly activities that are perceptible to the human senses fit neatly into the laws of classical mechanics where the motion of objects is very, very slow compared to the speed of light and objects are much, much bigger than the subatomic particles or even the largest atoms from which they are composed. Inasmuch as the earthly scientists seem to have adopted the speed of light as a universal constant (approximately 299,792.5 km/sec or 186,282 miles/sec using the commonly accepted ratio of 1.609344 km/mile or 0.621371 miles/km), the absolutely exact speed of light is still unknown and subject to experimental error. The most common approximations for the speed of light are stated either as 300,000 km/sec or as 186,000 miles/sec. Close enough, Sam murmured, especially when comparing the typical speeds of the common earthly objects to the speed of light. After all, the speed of 186,000 miles/sec is roughly ten million times that of a car traveling at 67 miles/hr. But, in the final analysis, Sam muttered, they really don t know much of anything with absolute precision. Everything they do and measure is an approximation, subject to uncertainty and error, even though each of their acts could be perceived with an immutable reality and precision even from the slowest pulsating dimensions in which he resides. Despite the fact that classical mechanics breaks down and becomes completely inadequate at speeds approaching the speed of light, Newton s laws of motion still serve the earthlings quite well. In the course of the application of those laws, most of them make an inherent assumption that all time-related measurements happen in a coordinate system or a frame of reference that is at rest. The size of their wobbly rock, no matter how minute from Sam s perspective, seems to offer them this comfort of immutability and absoluteness. And it is, indeed, a fairly safe bet for many of their routine activities,

Sam thought. It s a given that while driving a car, configuring Network Time Protocol (NTP) on a router, or diving into a pool, not too many (if any) give thought to the rate of motion of their solar system through the Milky Way galaxy, the rate of motion of their galaxy with respect to other galaxies, or even the rate of motion of their own wobbly rock around the sun. Just ask any of them: how fast were you traveling between A to B, where A and B represent locations on your rock Not too many will factor in the approximately 18.5 miles/sec orbital speed of their rock around the sun when giving an answer. Otherwise, the answer might be, During the last hour, I traveled at approximately 45 miles/hr between A and B, but I also traveled approximately 66,585 miles around the sun. Not the most likely answer! Sam smiled again. He knew how time is intertwined in every aspect of their lives and how their daily activities are structured around the various units of time. He could not help but wonder how many could define the base unit of earthly time, which is a second. How many would be able to define a second in terms other than as a portion of a still larger unit (a minute, an hour, or a day) or movement of one of the arms on a clock, the instrument that tracks time.

Webster s dictionary defines a second, or the base unit of time in the International System of Units, as being equal to the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium-133 atom. A definition of duration is the time during which something exists or lasts. One of the definitions of period is the interval of time required for a cyclic motion or phenomenon to complete a cycle and begin to repeat itself. Sam tried not to laugh. They define time with time! He empathized, though, with their plight. It s almost impossible to define time when you are confined by it and can t look outside of it. Their systems of transportation and all manner of commerce rely on time, or at least a system for measuring it. They get paid for performing services based on some units of time. He sighed as with mild resignation. They don t really have to understand time to navigate through it and take advantage of some of its seemingly beneficial, however transient, effects. But without fully understanding time, they are also subject to all of its impersonal ills. They simply have not grasped time as a form of energy itself that facilitates transformations between other energy forms an interface of sorts! They should be able to relate to the concept of an interface! At least their scientists have acknowledged time as another dimension, which is a step in the right direction! And because time is used in defining speed (including the speed of light!), it is a component of one of the most renowned equations that specifies energy/matter equivalence. But what if they did grasp time as another form of energy Would that motivate them to transcend it They would have to be given a vision of the possibilities resulting from the
