The Middle Ages are associated with the time period from the fall of the Western Roman Empire (AD 476) through the 15th century AD. The Dark Ages represent approximately the first five centuries of that period. Another 1,000+ years chock-full of events that were to shape the 21st century network administration and IT trends, Sam uttered as the panorama of the Middle Ages energy states unfolded before him. His continued observations led him to conclude that while certain key concepts and network administration techniques have their roots in the Middle Ages, many of the energy states from those times were a significant weight and a drag rather than a propellant for the current unfoldment of innovative networking techniques. He flashed back for a moment to his native orb, where the application of the Universal Solvent (US) to the past energy states was a common practice. The action of the US absolved the past states from their out-of-the-blueprint conditions and allowed the future states to be more readily outpictured without being affected by the past. Sam grappled with how the concept of the US could be released to the all-knowing earthlings without an offense to their well-developed reasoning powers. After all, the US was a form of energy that their scientific instruments could not yet register. Or, perhaps, the human reasoning powers are not so developed after all! he continued to muse. The last 3,000+ years since the sacking of Troy are nothing but a continuum of rise and fall of nations and civilizations: Troy, city-states of ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, the ever-changing border topologies of the European nations, and more. What a bunch of yo-yos, he exclaimed! The US could certainly help them with a more steadfast approach to maintaining a continuity of civilization instead of the ups and downs of birth, rise, and fall! He refocused on the Middle Ages panorama. The fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476 was a formality. The decline of the empire that led to the deposing of the last boy emperor, Romulus Augustus (how appropriate that the last emperor should be named after the Rome s founder and the first powerful emperor!), was a process that went on for several centuries before that ceremonial event took place. The fall, however, gave rise to segmentation throughout the empire s topology (a key concept in managing network performance) and through it the eventual emergence of the European nation states. The barbarians who flooded and eventually brought down the Roman Empire set the pattern for the Ethernet broadcast storms that, if unchecked by properly configured STP can eas, ily melt down modern networks. Medieval Europe s network of fortified castles with their bastions and drawbridges defines today s firewall technology. The stench of the countless dead from plagues and endless battles of the Middle Age period is quite comparable to the atmosphere that surrounds the many mergers, takeovers, bankruptcies, and dissolutions of the seemingly endless dot-coms. But Sam was suddenly astounded at what he saw as he drew to conclusion his Middle Ages scans. A few among the Middle Age players were already aware of the US and were applying it quite successfully to some of the past energy states. They knew what the future held if unencumbered by the past! Those were the Middle Age visionaries

energizing the blueprints of the Renaissance, the period of the Industrial Revolution, and the modern times. He was glad to observe a similar vision and US-awareness among the NTP designers and developers of today.

At best, the Industrial Revolution (IR) is a very poor label to describe the varying and not precisely definable (within a second, a day, or even a year!) periods of time in various parts of the world during which a remarkable and a very far-reaching social transformation was taking place. Attempting to define the Industrial Revolution in a sentence or two makes almost as much sense as trying to describe the varied aspects of modern-day network administration to a pre Internet era CEO, Sam quipped. But, however difficult it might be to define briefly the Industrial Revolution or to confine its duration to exact dates (in Britain, specifically, it is being approximated as lasting from about 1750 to about 1850), the activities that took place during its tenure made an indelible impression on modern-day networking. The forces that were unleashed during the periods of the IR ushered major changes in the population distribution (accelerated growth of cities), the means of making money (mostly from manufacturing and commerce rather than agriculture), the movement of goods within and between countries (via railroads and steam ships), and the new techniques of generating and harnessing power (via steam and internal combustion engines). Aggregation and core routers switching millions of packets per second and linked by high-speed backbones are the major population centers of the industrial era exchanging goods via railways. Web hosting, e-commerce, managed data services, and voice over IP (VoIP) are just a smattering of new income streams. And how about those new means of generating and harnessing power The raw materials for the new power sources were there all along, even during the Middle Ages and before. Sam paused for a moment. NTP has been around now for two decades. The question is, how soon will they be able to recognize it as the key to time transcendence
