Screening of the incoming NTP packets via an extended IP access control list, list 199 in the example. List 199 is first defined and then applied to an interface via an ip access-group command. This method relies on the generic capabilities of Cisco s ACLs to deny incoming NTP traffic. Using a standard IP ACL to identify NTP servers and then allowing those servers to peer with this host. This is accomplished through the combination of defining a standard IP ACL 55 and then applying the ACL in the ntp access-group command that s used with the peer parameter. Once the access-group command is used with the peer parameter, it means that this router will peer only with those timeservers that are matched by the ACL that s referenced with the command, i.e., 55 in the example. When no ntp access-group command is used, any timeserver can attempt to peer with this router with no restrictions whatsoever. However, whether an active or passive symmetric mode results will depend on whether peer statements are also configured on this router. Using a standard ACL to identify networks that can use this router as their server. This is accomplished through the combination of IP ACL 77 and the use of the ntp access-group command with the serve-only parameter. In Listing 5-11, hosts from subnets 172.16.0.0, 172.18.1.0, and 192.168.3.0 will be able to use this router as a timeserver. Whether it s a good idea from a design point of view is not the issue that s being addressed here!
