A high-availability system will ensure almost continuous data availability in the face of disasters of just about any kind. The key to providing such high availability is to have multiple data systems using various architectures. Oracle provides several alternatives, including the following: Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC): Oracle RAC uses multiple Oracle instances on multiple nodes (servers) to connect to a single database. In the event of a node failure, the surviving nodes recover the failed instance while providing continuous service to the users, who aren t aware that anything went wrong. Oracle RAC provides high availability, and under some circumstances, it can also enhance performance and provide scalability.
