If the recipient is in the same network as the sender, the message is delivered directly to the recipient; otherwise, it is sent to a router, which then forwards the message toward the destination network. Once the message reaches the router of the destination network, the message is delivered to the recipient. There may be multiple routers in the delivery path. Multicasting is not supported in point-to-point, because the sender specifies a unique destination client. All notification messages carry a subject property, and subscribers can listen for notifications with a given subject. In PubSub interactions, the rendezvous point is a message queue, which is identified by the message subject. RV messages are delivered to the recipient application using a push model. The recipient registers with the local RV daemon, providing a queue name and a callback method. RV stores incoming messages in queues. There are queues for different kinds of messages, such as timer messages, diagnostic messages, and normal user messages. A subject can also be provided. When a message arrives, it is wrapped in an event object, and the object is placed in the appropriate event queue and subsequently dispatched to the recipient application by calling the registered callback method. When messages arrive faster than they can be processed, they are buffered up in the event queues. The RV daemon uses a separate dispatch thread for each event queue, so events in each queue are processed one at a time, in the order received.

The basis for message filtering in RV is the message subject. Subject-based filtering is only available for PubSub messages. Subjects are specified using a dot notation, such as Shipping.Air. Subjects can define a hierarchical subject space. An example might be the three subjects Shipping, Shipping.Air, and Shipping.Air.Priority. Wildcard subjects are possible, so the subject Shipping.* would indicate all types of Shipping messages. RV doesn t have a centralized notification service, so the burden of filtering must be placed somewhere else. The RV architects opted for the receiving end. When an RV client publishes a message, a subject must be provided. The message is broadcast to all the other RV clients in the system. A multicast message only travels once through the network, regardless of the number of RV clients or subscribers. When an RV daemon receives a message, it checks the subject. If the subject was subscribed to by a client application, the message is grabbed, wrapped in an event object, and saved in an event queue for subsequent dispatching to the recipient application.
