When your pivot table includes a calculated item, all the items are listed for fields that intersect the calculated item. It s irritating, it can slow down a large pivot table, and there s no way to turn off this behavior. The calculated item generates a Cartesian product, which is a result where every possible combination of items is created in the NewCat calculation. In the pivot table shown in Figure 6-13, the NewCat value is calculated for each City, for each Region, and shows a zero result where no data is available.

Problem
When you receive the data for your pivot table, some fields occasionally contain extra space characters at the end of the entry, due to sloppy data entry. In your source data Excel Table, when you apply a filter on the City column, items with differing trailing spaces such as Boston and Boston show as one entry in the column heading s filter list. When you add the City field to the pivot table, Boston and Boston show up separately, but you d like them treated as one item. This problem is based on the Spaces.xlsx sample workbook.
Workaround
A pivot table doesn t ignore trailing spaces, the way an Excel Table s filter does. You could add another column to the source table, and use the TRIM worksheet function to remove the extra spaces. For example, do the following if city names are in Column C: 1. Create a new column in the source data, with the heading CityName. 2. In Row 2 of the new column, enter the formula =TRIM(C2). 3. Copy the formula down to the last row of data in the source table. If the source data is stored in an Excel Table, the formula should copy down automatically. 4. Refresh the pivot table, and then add the CityName field to replace the City field in the pivot table.
CHAPTER 6 MODIFYING A PIVOT TABLE
6.18. Using a Pivot Table: Allowing Drag-and-Drop
Problem
In previous versions of Excel, you were able to drag fields from the PivotTable Field List onto the pivot table layout. In Excel 2007, you can only move the fields within the areas in the PivotTable Field List. You d like to move fields onto the worksheet layout, as you did before. This problem is based on the Sales_06.xlsx sample workbook.
Solution
If you prefer to drag the fields onto the worksheet layout, you can change a pivot table option. 1. Right-click a cell in the pivot table, and then click PivotTable Options. 2. Click the Display tab, and add a check mark to Classic PivotTable Layout. 3. Click OK, to close the PivotTable Options dialog box. 4. Point to a field label, such as Region, in the pivot table layout, and when the pointer changes to a four-headed arrow, drag the field label to a different area (see Figure 6-15). Or, drag fields into the pivot table layout from the PivotTable Field List, or drag field labels out of the pivot table layout.
Figure 6-15. Dragging fields in Classic PivotTable layout When you enable the Classic PivotTable layout option, the pivot table s report layout automatically changes to Tabular form. You can use this layout, or the Outline form, with the Classic PivotTable layout. If you change the layout to Compact form, the blue outlines of the pivot table areas are still visible on the worksheet when the pivot table is active. However, you won t be able to drag-and-drop the fields within the pivot table layout on the worksheet.
