Goal seeking, along with data tables (see section 6.6: Create a Data Table for more information), scenarios (see section 6.10: Create a Scenario for more information), and Solver (see section 6.12: Perform What-If Data Analysis with Solver for more information) are part of Excel s what-if data analysis toolset. In the case of goal seeking, you can calculate a formula s input value when you want to work backward from the formula s answer. For example, if you have a mortgage payment schedule and you know the mortgage amount, the monthly payment, and the number of months in the payment schedule, you can use goal seeking to calculate the mortgage s interest rate.

In the By Changing Cell box, type or click the reference for the single worksheet cell that contains the value that you want to adjust. This cell must be referenced by the formula in the cell you specified earlier in the Set Cell box. 5. Click OK. The Goal Seek Status dialog box will appear, confirming whether Excel is able to find a solution. It will also display the target value sought in the To Value box and the current value of the cell in the By Changing Cell box, which may not necessarily match the target value. If Excel does find a solution, the target value and the current value will be equivalent.
