Tables and indexes in Axapta have the following naming conventions in the underlying database system, and knowing them is a great help when you have to look under the hood. Tables are given the same name as in the AOT, but if the name is a reserved word in the database system, then the name is delimited by the values given in system variables QUOTEPRE and QUOTEPOST. Fields are given the same name as in the AOT, but if the name is a reserved word in the database system, then like table names it is delimited by the values given in system variables QUOTEPRE and QUOTEPOST. If a field is derived from an extended data type that has array elements, a field is created in the table for each respective array entry following this pattern: [FieldName] for the first array; e.g., PhoneNum [FieldNameN_] ]for all but the first array, where N starts at 2; e.g., PhoneNum2_, PhoneNum3_ Indexes follow the pattern [I_][TableId][NameOfIndex] TableId is a generated number that is assigned to a table when it s created.

For internal reasons, Axapta automatically adds two fields to the tables it creates in the database, and it creates an index automatically on all tables that do not have an index defined in the AOT. The two fields are DataAreaId and RecId:

DataAreaId is a unique identifier per company that can be up to three characters long and specifies which company the data in the record belongs to. When a new record is inserted, Axapta inserts the current company ID in this field automatically. When selecting records from a table with the SaveDataPerCompany property enabled, DataAreaId = [Current Company] is added to the where clause automatically so only records for the current company are selected. When dealing with a company that is part of a virtual company setup, the DataAreaId of the virtual company is used for the tables that are shared. RecId is always added to tables, and is an 8-bit signed integer that is unique for every record in a company.

unique RecIds per company/table pair, which allows you to significantly increase the number of records you can have per company. You do this by setting the system variable INDEX to 64 system variables are explained later in this chapter. It s very important to notice that this feature must be turned on from the start, or not turned on at all. Turning it on on an existing system will result in mixing two different numbering systems, but Axapta will process all data using the currently specified system only, causing havoc.

Note RecIds are drawn in sets of 25, and numbers from drawn sets are lost if not used, but Axapta has
a utility called Check Record IDs that can reclaim unused IDs. However, it s unlikely that this will help except temporarily it will not likely yield a significant pool of RecIds once you hit the limit of 4,294,967,296 imposed by the biggest number that can be represented by a 32-bit integer.
Virtual Fields
Virtual fields, also know as virtual columns in Axapta, are fields that can be referenced in tables but are not defined by default in the database. Table 19-1 lists them. Most virtual fields can be changed into real fields by setting a property on the table; only the TableId and SequenceNum fields cannot be changed from virtual to real.
