The fourth and final required field on the Item form is Dimension Group. The Dimension Group form, located at Inventory Management Setup Dimensions Dimension Groups, is split into Item Dimensions and Storage Dimensions areas, as you can see in Figure 8-5. You use these areas in the Dimension Group form to specify the following: Item dimensions: Specify an item s attributes. The standard Axapta item dimensions consist of configuration, size, and color. These three can be renamed if needed. Similar to how financial dimensions are used to simplify the chart of accounts, item dimensions can be used to simplify the Items table. Storage dimensions: Specify how an item is received in inventory, stored in inventory, and issued from inventory.

Description
By declaring a dimension Primary Stocking, you are selecting that this dimension must be specified during any update made to an item belonging to this group. All active item dimensions have the Primary Stocking option checked, as these attributes physically separate the items that use these dimensions. Primary Stocking is optional on storage dimensions. Selecting this option tells Axapta that you will allow physical receipts with this attribute blank or not stated. This option is not available if Primary Stocking is checked. Selecting this option tells Axapta that you will allow physical issues with this attribute blank or not stated. This option is not available if Primary Stocking is checked. Selecting this option tells Axapta to consider this dimension when checking inventory on hand. This option also tells Axapta to consider this dimension when calculating physical inventory values, if being used.

Note The options available on the Overview tab are just the beginning of the options that you have in
defining the different inventory dimensions and how they are handled throughout Axapta. Make certain to understand all of the fields on the General and Editing tabs of this form.
Item Dimensions
For each item that uses a dimension group that has one or more item dimensions active, you will need to maintain the available item dimensions and specify any relevant combinations of the item dimensions. These can be defined under the Item Dimensions folder by selecting Inventory Management Setup Dimensions Item Dimensions; or, from the Item form, click the Setup button. Only the dimensions that are marked active via the item s dimension Group will be available, as you can see in Figure 8-6.
Figure 8-6. Options available from Item form, Setup button. This item has a dimension group with size and color as active dimensions. Whenever you are using multiple item dimensions, it is important that you specify the combinations of different item dimensions that are available. This can be done manually by using the Item Dimension Combinations option from the Setup menu, as shown in Figure 8-6, or this can be done automatically by clicking the Auto-create Combinations check box on the General tab of the Item form, also shown in Figure 8-6. If you have chosen to use standard costing and wish to specify cost prices by item dimension combinations, you should enable the Use combination cost price option on the General
