You will normally install Axapta from the distribution CD or from an image or copy on a shared hard disk. The procedure is exactly the same either way: Insert the CD or go to the top-level folder of the Axapta copy on the hard disk, and run the program Setup.exe. This will bring up the Axapta installation portal, as shown in Figure 2-2. We will begin with an installation in 2-tier mode, as you must install and configure Axapta in 2-tier mode before connecting any 2-tier clients. As noted earlier, we are using SQL Server in this installation.

You can access the documentation available with the standard CD distribution by choosing the Documentation option on the menu bar, as shown in Figure 2-3. We suggest that you read the Prerequisites and Installation Guide sections, and browse through the others. After installing Axapta, you will need to rely on the Guides and Technical Information sections. These are located in the respective folders under the Documentation folder in the root of the CD.

documents; however, the file names are, for the most part, meaningless. You can either try to figure out the file names and open the files directly, or place the Setup.htm file and the Autorun folder (that is, the installation portal), located at the root of the CD, under the same path as the Documentation folder. You can then fire up the installation portal and use the links it provides. (Actually, you can also place the Setup.htm file and Autorun folder anywhere you please, as long as you correct all the references to point to the correct base path.)
Installing Axapta 3.0
Let s go ahead and install Axapta. Click the Navision Axapta 3.0 menu bar option. In the submenu displayed on the upper left side of the resulting page choose Readme. You ll see the Readme information, as shown in Figure 2-4. Scan it for any issues that might be of particular interest to you.
CHAPTER 2 AXAPTA INSTALLATION

Next, choose Prerequisites from the submenu. This takes you to a section from which you can install Internet Explorer and an SQL Server client. The Internet Explorer link takes you to the Microsoft Web site, where you can download the browser, if necessary. If you are going to use a SQL Server database that is installed on a separate machine, you might be tempted to install the client provided. However, we recommend that you go to the Microsoft Web site and download the latest service pack for your SQL Server installation and the latest version of the client. To start the installation process, choose the Individual Install menu from the submenu on the left menu pane. You ll see some brief information and three links, one for each of the Axapta software components that you need to install, as shown in Figure 2-5.
CHAPTER 2 AXAPTA INSTALLATION
Figure 2-5. Beginning individual component installation
We ll follow the order indicated to install each component.
Installing the Application Component
Follow these steps to install the application component. 1. Click the Application link to start installing the Application component. A dialog box will pop up, asking if you want to run or save the file the link points to, and you might also see a security warning, depending on your operating system and security settings. Choose Run in both cases to start the installation. 2. The first page of the wizard displays some copyright information and what the wizard does. Select Next to continue. 3. The license agreement page appears next. You can use the drop-down combo box at the lower-left side to view the locale-specific version in English, and the Translate button to see the agreement in the language of the locale in which you want it displayed. Read the terms of the license and accept it if you want to proceed. 4. Fill in the customer information as you do with other software products that you are licensed for, and then continue.
