PGP, or Pretty Good Privacy, is a well-known and trusted encryption technology. Perhaps most commonly used for the purpose of encrypting and digitally signing emails, PGP actually offers a wealth of security and privacy features that can help users and system administrators alike ensure that their data is protected. While PGP started out as a small grassroots type of technology, it has since spawned into a wide variety of implementations, thanks largely due to its formal adoption as a standard in the form of OpenPGP, as defined in RFC 4880. A number of freeware and commercial applications have grown off of this standard, and their support and features range far and wide from digital signing of files, to encryption of remote network connections, such as network file servers or instant messaging sessions. As you may have guessed, this includes the ability for FDE provided through the commercial product PGP Whole Disk Encryption (WDE) from the PGP Corporation (www.pgp.com). Like Check Point, PGP WDE provides full support for OS X, and can be used to ensure that the volumes attached to your system are fully protected (as the name might imply!). Full disk protection is provided through a very similar approach to Check Point, and utilizes a custom boot loader that interjects very early on in the boot process to provide the ability for pre-boot authentication; just like Check Point, the user is prompted to authenticate prior to the system being able to read the OS X system on an encrypted disk, and therefore boot off of it. PGP whole disk encryption (WDE) has a very robust feature set, and supports numerous encryption algorithms, including the familiar AES-256 algorithm that we have seen throughout this chapter. PGP also supports a very strong hashing algorithm in the form of SHA-2-256, which provides very strong encryption on the stored keys themselves. Upon first configuring whole disk encryption, the PGP system will first create a public and private key which operate in a similar manner to other PKI systems that we have discussed in this chapter: the public key is, as its name implies, a public file that can be distributed to anyone that might intend to send you encrypted data. The private key is essential to the decryption of any data generated with the public key; and therefore should be guarded with utmost care. The private key itself is protected with your passphrase, and this passphrase is required in order to utilize the private key to decrypt data. Once these keys are created, it is then possible to utilize them to begin to encrypt data stored on your local disks. Unfortunately, unlike Check Point, PGP WDE does not support encryption of individual partitions, and must instead be used to protect an entire disk. This is likely desirable in most environments anyway, as few corporate laptops will have multiple partitions, but is worth noting. While PGP Whole Disk Encryption provides for strong security in and of itself, the strength of the solution is greatly improved through the use of PGP management suite: PGP Universal Server. PGP Universal Server allows administrators to define and enforce various security policies, say for instance requiring any removable media to utilize encryption. Unfortunately, this is also where PGP Whole Disk Encryption on OS X falls short. While Universal Server can be used to manage OS X machines, there are a number of features that are not yet available for this platform, and unfortunately some of them are pretty key features. For instance, we just provided the example of using PHP Universal Server to enforce a policy which requires that removable media be encrypted. Unfortunately, this useful feature is only available on Windows machines. Additionally limitations include limited Directory Services integration (such as Active Directory singlesign on), no support for hardware token authentication (such as Smart Cards), and no support for password lock out policies based on failed attempts. The lack of these features may prove to be an issue in your environment, and then again, it may turn out to be a non-issue. It really all comes down to your needs. Certainly, features found in alternate platforms but currently unavailable in OS X will slowly make their way into the product but the most important and key feature is that it provides a method to ensure that all data on your laptop or desktop s primary disk is protected with strong encrypted, and that alone provides for a good increase in security over a standard OS X system.
