One way to avoid unwanted traffic is to run Apache on a port other than port 80. If your web site is Internet facing, you can then redirect incoming traffic on port 80 to a different system on your network. This is not entirely foolproof, however, because some visitors who have outgoing traffic limited by their own firewalls may have trouble getting to your web site if it runs over a different port. Also, you may make it difficult for users to find the right port on which to access services, leading to possible frustration for legitimate users. To customize the port on which the web server runs, open the httpd.conf file from the /private/etc/apache2/ folder. From here, scroll down until you see the Listen variable. Edit the number for the listener to reflect the port you want the web server to run on, and save your changes. When you restart apache (or the computer), it will be running on the new port. NOTE: If you are using a Mac as a dedicated web server, you should disable any ports that are not being used. Port 80 (unless it has been redirected) and port 443 are the two ports you ll need open for web access. See 11 (for OS X Client) or 16 (for OS X Server) for more details about disabling ports.

Web servers do not have to run on the frontline right behind your firewall. It is possible to use the IP address of another server to masquerade as your web server, filtering out unwanted visitors and then relaying the legitimate traffic back and forth between your LAN and the Internet. For more about securing Proxy Servers, see 10.

The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and server-side includes are both methods for allowing apache to call other applications. CGI is typically used to process data entered in a form on a web site. Server-side includes are used for including dynamic information in documents sent to clients, such as the current date, the last modification date of the file, and the size or last modification of other files. As with other options within Apache, these should be enabled only if required. To disable them, use Includes or ExecCGI in your options line. These options can be used on a per-directory basis using Apache directives in the httpd.conf file. Web designers will often place CGI files in locations that are not secure or attempt to assign them rights that are insecure and give wrong permissions to users who access these files and scripts. Restricting the allowed locations of executable scripts allows administrators to keep all CGI scripts in a central location to ensure proper security for these scripts. This also limits the damage that can be done by scripts that may be uploaded to a web directory and executed by someone with improper permissions. Many administrators are already familiar with using a dedicated directory for running CGI scripts or includes. The industry standard is to use the CGI-BIN directory on web servers. In Mac OS X, this folder is called the CGI-Executables directory by default. To maintain standards, you will notice the following line in the httpd.conf file:

This line allows references to directories called cgi-bin to point to the CGI-Executables directory. The default permissions on this directory allow only the everyone group to execute the contents of the directory. By using ls al on this directory, you can see the appropriate permissions for files Apple already has there.

The immense popularity of Apache is due in part to the large number of modules that have been developed for it. However, when used improperly, these modules can represent a security risk. To reduce the risk associated with running a web server, all modules not required should be disabled by placing a # at the beginning of the LoadModule line in httpd.conf. To learn which modules are required, look to the manual pages at apache.org to get a better idea of what they are, or simply disable them one by one to see which modules
