You can provide access to directories based on passwords in a variety of manners, including using Kerberos, mod_auth, ldap, or the .htaccess file. Using an .htaccess file is common when dealing with web hosting environments and when creating files using scripts to control access to directories and files.

An .htaccess file is a simple ASCII text file that allows administrators to personalize error pages, password-protect directories, and redirect traffic. The .htaccess file can be stored in your main site directory, or in any subdirectory that you want to protect. You can use a regular text editor, such as TextEdit, TextMate, vi, or pico, to create and edit an .htaccess file. Not all web hosts will support .htaccess files, so you should consult your hosting administrator if you are in a shared hosting environment. .htaccess files will also not be available if you are running Apache on Windows. TIP: Before editing the .htaccess file, keep a backup of the original .htaccess file and web site configuration handy in case you have any problems with the file. Although the .htaccess file can be stored in the main site directory, or any of the subdirectories, the commands in the .htaccess file will directly affect the containing directory, as well as any subdirectories contained therein. If it is stored at the root of your site, it will affect the whole site. If it is stored in a subdirectory, it will affect only the files in that subdirectory. Each file in a directory is affected by the closest .htaccess file available, whether that is in the same folder as the file, or the directories above it. The same is true for .htgroup and .htpasswd files. There are many ways to create a .htaccess file. You can use the touch shell command to create the file and then edit it with a text editor. You can also create the file within a text editor and use an FTP program to upload the file into the proper directory. When you are uploading a .htaccess file, make sure the file transfer typs is set to ASCII mode to avoid any initial errors when working with the file. The permissions on an .htaccess, .htgroup, or .htpasswd file should typically be 644 (rw- r-- r--). This will give the group and user read-only access to this file. For more information on reading permissions, refer to 4. NOTE: Commands in the .htaccess file are meant to be on one line only. Be sure that your text editor has line wrap turned off.

The .htaccess file gives you the ability to redirect visitors to a different page if they try to access an invalid location. You can use a custom error page for any type of error that corresponds with its unique error number. One of the most common, and frustrating, error codes is the dreaded error 404, Page Not Found. The layout for this command in the .htaccess file is as follows:

If you want to keep all the error pages in a separate directory, just include the directory name in the file path like this:
ErrorDocument 404 /errorpages/404.html

Code
400 401 403 404 500
Name
Bad Request Authorization Required Forbidden Not Found Internal Server Error
Description
Typically a generic error. Invalid access to a protected area without authorization. You do not have permissions to access the file. The page could not be found. Internal server errors in any scripts you have running.
By customizing your error code pages, you will also be increasing the overall security of your server. Most servers use the same error pages that the server came with. This has led to people attempting to use Google to search for all the web pages that have a certain string of text in them in order to obtain a list of all the web servers running a certain version of software, ultimately looking for servers that will have a specific exploit. Customizing error codes will help you stay away from these kinds of Internet searches and the exploits that the results target.
