Apple s built-in FTP server supports Kerberos authentication and can be used with thirdparty software to allow for better authentication security. By default, FTP transmits the session username and password via clear text. When using the Apple FTP server with a third-party client such as Fetch.app, the FTP client software can negotiate a GSSAPI connection using Kerberos. This allows the client to authenticate with a Kerberos ticket rather than a password. Although this does allow for better security during the authentication exchange, it does not prevent an attacker from watching the session data. Apple s current built-in FTP server does not support transport layer security such as SSL, while the OpenSSH suite does have a more secure protocol known as SFTP, which supports both Kerberos authentication and session layer security. Unfortunately, it cannot be easily configured via the graphic interface, and as a result, users effectively are not jailed (or trapped, the good kind) within a specific directory such as their home folder or linked share points. FTP on Mac OS X Server is a highly insecure transport protocol. If it must be used, it s advisable to use SFTP or a third-party tool, such as Rumpus. NOTE: A chroot command is a technique under *nix whereby a process is permanently restricted to an isolated subset of the filesystem. Because there are insecurities within FTP and use in Mac OS X, chroot can be used to further secure FTP. One easy way to obtain this functionality without a lot of command-line configuration is to use Rumpus, a web-enabled FTP application.

By default, when you connect to an AirPort based network you will only need to provide a password. According to how the network was configured, this password can be either pretty weak or pretty strong, but despite the strength of the encryption or the strength of the password, it has no policies that will lock the password out after incorrect attempts. Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) can help take the security of your wireless network to the next level by tying the password of your wireless environment into that of your Open Directory environment. In this section, we ll look at leveraging RADIUS to configure an AirPort environment to use Open Directory. NOTE: Before you begin this walk-through of implementing RADIUS on your server, make sure the server is running Open Directory and that the forward and reverse DNS information for the server is correct. The first step to using RADIUS is to enable it. To do this, open Server Admin, click the name of the server in the Servers list, and click the Services tab. Find RADIUS in the list of services below each server, and place a check mark in the box to the left of it. Click Save, and you should see RADIUS in the Servers list.

Now that RADIUS has been enabled, let s select a certificate. For the purpose of this walk-through, we re going to use the default certificate that comes with OS X Server. Click RADIUS under the Servers list, and then click the Settings button. Click the RADIUS Certificate drop-down menu, and select the Default certificate as you can see in Figure 16 31. Click the Edit Allowed Users button to go to the SACL screen in Server Admin. Back at the RADIUS screen in Server Admin, click on the Start RADIUS button in the bottom-left corner of the screen. RADIUS is now ready to accept authentication. The next step is to configure an AirPort device to work with RADIUS. To do this, click the Base Stations button in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Now click Browse, and select the first base station of your wireless environment from the list of found base stations. Enter the password for the AirPort device, and click Save. Wait for the AirPort device to complete its restart.
