Building a Theme Using Adobe Illustrator
Flash Catalyst certainly provides a streamlined way to bring artwork from Creative Suite applications into Flex, but you can also use FXG directly from those applications. This approach might be helpful if you re creating one-off skins or you don t have access to Flash Catalyst. In many ways, going this route is a manual version of what Flash Catalyst does for you however, the code from Illustrator can be used as optimized FXG instead of the MXML Graphics (MXMLG) and will be rendered faster. Let s walk through the steps for creating a single Button skin.
1. Open the DarkNKnightButton.ai file in Illustrator CS4. This file contains artwork for another
button skin.
2. Select FileChoose Save As. For the Save As Type select FXG, and then click the Save
button.
3. A window within the FXG options dialog box will be displayed. Leave the defaults for
everything and click the Show Code button.
4. The FXG that represents the skin artwork will be displayed, in addition to markup that is used
by Illustrator to translate the FXG. Everything you need for your skin is wrapped in a Group tag.
5. Copy the markup that includes the Group tags to the clipboard:

6. Go into Flash Builder 4, create a new MXML file called BlueButtonSkin.mxml, and select Skin
as the base class. Select File New MXML Component. The wizard opens and you can set Based on as spark.components.supportClasses.Skin.
7. Paste the FXG markup you copied in between the s:Skin tags. 8. Since you want the Label of this skin to be dynamic, we need to replace the TextGraphic
tag with a RichText tag.
