Figure 14-3. The Johnny Law Chronicles I asked Johnny (not his real name, in case you wondered) some questions via email. Q. How did you get started blogging, and how are you liking it A. I have always had a desire to write a book about my police experiences once I retire. To help preserve my memories for the book, I figured the best way to do it was to start some kind of journal. I kept putting it off until one day, I was surfing the Internet and came across a police blog (http://texas-music.blogspot.com). This guy really impressed me with his writing, and I started looking at other blogs out there. After reading a few different ones, I started thinking that a blog would be a good way to start my journal and practice my writing skills.

I am really enjoying it so far. It is very therapeutic to be able to put my thoughts in writing. For example, the story I wrote about almost shooting the guy with the cell phone was something that I have been wanting to get off my chest for a long time. Writing about it seemed to be a release of some sort. Now, when something happens at work that I find interesting, I start thinking about how I want to describe it in my blog. Q. Do your fellow officers know about your blog A. Two officers who I consider close friends know about the blog. I told them because I trust them and I wanted someone to act as a bullshit meter to prevent me from exaggerating things. They are supportive but constantly warn me to not write things that would get me trouble. Because of that, I am always trying to keep from being too critical about my department or coworkers. However, I don t have a problem complaining about general police problems. Q. Your world is unlike anything we ve ever seen on television about what cops do. It s jolting to read. Why is there such a disconnect A. I think that Hollywood has given people unrealistic expectations. People expect you to be able to shoot the knife out of a person s hand. Cases should be solved within a few days at the maximum. You should be able to fingerprint anything and come up with a match every time. People don t understand the limits of technology or about how overworked we are. They think we have all this high-tech equipment and can devote all our time on their one crime. I remember my reaction when I saw that the detectives on CSI: Miami drove a shiny Hummer 2. LOL that is such bull. We drive Ford Tauruses with 80K+ miles on them. Being a cop has ruined most cop movies for me. I can t watch them without complaining about the way they portray things. However, it would be a boring movie if it were 100% realistic. The hero would get in a gunfight that would last a couple of seconds and be chaotic. He would probably miss 75% of his shots and then be on restricted duty for several weeks during the investigation. Q. What has surprised you most about writing this blog A. I think the biggest thing is that people are actually reading it! The site recently got over 1,000 hits. That is not that much traffic in the scheme of things, but it is very flattering to know that some people are reading about my experiences and coming back for more. I also always enjoy reading the comments that people leave. It seems that some are cops and others are civilians. I hope that I am able to help a few people see that police are human beings, too, and maybe be a little more understanding when they have to deal with us. Q. Do you have anything else you want to say A. I hope to continue blogging for as long as I can. I think it is a great medium, and I read quite a few myself. Where else can you get insight into so many lives I have come across blogs as varied as military recruiters to nightclub bouncers to strippers. It s like reality TV but with more substance and commentary.
