One of the keys to the growth of blogging is that layouts are automated by the use of templates. Templates are the mold into which your content gets poured. As a blogger, you don t have to worry about where your content goes or how it s formatted, because the template takes care of that. Blogger comes with more than 30 standard templates, and these are fine to start with. But this is your blog, and its template should arrange and format your content the way you want it. With Blogger, it s easy to make changes.

You have a choice here of whether you want to tweak and nudge the basic template or replace it with a custom template. Let s make just two changes to get a feeling for how this works. Throughout Part 2, we will be looking at the whys and wherefores of blog formatting in much more detail. First off, let s change the Blogger NavBar (at the top of every Blogger blog) from standard blue to something slightly less standard. Just pick Black from the Blogger NavBar drop-down menu at the top of the Template page (see Figure 3-7). Next, change the blog headline ( Clear Blogging in my blog) to be a little smaller than it is now. After perusing Blogger s excellent Help feature,3 I know that the following line in my template:

h1{padding:25px 0px 10px 5%;border-top:double 3px #BF5C00;border-bottom:solid 1px #E89E47; color:#F5DEB3;background:#DE7008;font:bold 300% Verdana,Sans-Serif; letter-spacing:-2px;} defines the format for an h1 heading. Since the headline for my blog is the first and largest, it seems logical that changing it would change what I want. So I ll change that font:bold 300% to font:bold 200%. Figures 3-8 and 3-9 show the before and after.

Figure 3-9. Clear Blogging at 200 percent of the base size Now, I can go on tweaking this format, clicking the Preview button, and then saving template changes for as long as I want. It s easy, and I can learn just enough Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) the stuff that defines how to format different parts of a web page by trying some of the examples in Blogger s Help. I can even dig into the whole CSS thing by searching the blogosphere or Web, or by getting my hands on a good CSS tutorial.4 But, I really don t want to do that right now. Don t get me wrong. I m a programmer, and I love this stuff. But as much fun as it is, it s a tangent left best for another time, if you are so inclined. So, let s look at the other way of changing your Blogger template to something new and different, which I call, ahem, copy and paste.
Replacing the Template
First, do a search for Blogger Templates +free online. When this was written, these were three of the best sites for free Blogger templates:
4. I recommend Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML (O Reilly Media, 2005) or Simon Collison s Beginning CSS Web Development: From Novice to Professional (Apress, 2006). You can read more about the former and get a sample chapter at http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2005/12/ head_first_html.html.
