The installation package comes with a good set of documentation to get you started with Oracle XE. If you already know Oracle, the process will be simple. If you are new to Oracle, please read the help documents carefully. Oracle XE comes with a sample schema of a fictional human resources firm. We ll query the database for employee information and see how we can report on it with client-side RS. Please see Figure 10-14 for the results of the query we ll use to develop our report.

Figure 10-14. Query results from the Oracle 10g Express HR schema As you can see in Figure 10-14, I m selecting the three columns from the view EMP_DETAILS_VIEW. We ll send the same query from our Windows Forms client and develop a simple report to list all employees names and salary information. When we finish the report, the output in the preview mode should look similar to the report shown in Figure 10-15.

Please open Visual Studio, and use the following steps to create a Windows application project; refer to Figure 10-2 for an illustration of these steps: 1. Click File New Project, or you can press the hot key Ctrl+Shift+N. 2. In the Project types pane of New Project dialog box, select Visual C# Windows. 3. In the Templates pane, select Windows Application. 4. Please give the application a name; I ve called the project OracleReport. You may choose a different location for storing the application files according to your preference. 5. Click the OK button to finish the process; Visual Studio will create a new Windows application project. Also notice that a new form with name Form1 is part of the project. Let s next add the dataset and ReportViewer to the project. Select the project in Solution Explorer, right-click it, and select Add New Item DataSet. Please name the dataset dsOracle. Before you add the ReportViewer, make sure Form1 is open in designer. Now, add the ReportViewer to the project by selecting Data ReportViewer and dragging and dropping it onto the design surface. Please set the properties in Table 10-5.

Step 1: Creating a Data Table
Since we already have the dataset in the project, it s time to add a data table to it. Please use the following steps to add a data table inside the dataset: 1. You can go to the dataset designer in two ways: double-click dsOracle inside Solution Explorer, or right-click dsOracle node and select View Designer. 2. To add the data table, right-click the design surface, and select Add DataTable. 3. Click the Header of the newly created data table, and name it dtOracle. Add columns to dtOracle by right-clicking DataTable and selecting Add Column. 4. Add the following columns into data table; your data table should look like Figure 10-16: first_name (System.String) last_name (System. String) salary (System.Double)
Figure 10-16. Final look of the data table dtOracle
Step 2: Designing the Report Layout
If you look at the Oracle report layout in Figure 10-15, what you ll find is a simple Employee List report. In this report, we have to deal with only the header and body sections. The header section contains the report title, page number, and print date. We ll use the table report item to display employee details.
CHAPTER 10 s REPORTING ON OTHER DATA SOURCES
We have our dataset in place with the data table and all the needed columns, so we re all set to start designing the report layout. Add the report by selecting the project in Solution Explorer, right-clicking it, and selecting Add New Item. Select Report from the Add New Item dialog box, and name the report rptOracle.rdlc. Click the Add button to complete the process; a new report is now part of the project.
