Sample Rate: The higher the sample rate, the better quality your recording should be at the expense of using up more disk space and requiring more data throughput. 44100Hz is the sample rate of a standard audio CD, but 48000Hz and 96000Hz are also popular recording rates. Many contemporary consumer sound chipsets can only do 48000Hz sampling and rely on software to convert material at other rates. If you start jackd at a different sample rate but get 48000Hz reported regardless, then you have one of these chipsets in your machine. It s no big deal, because 48000 is a reasonable sample rate setting, and you can downsample your recording to burn a CD later. Periods/Buffer: This should be set to 2 for most PCI sound cards. USB audio devices usually prefer a setting of 3. Experiment, and see which setting gives you the best results for your hardware. If you re having trouble with xruns at any Frames/Period setting, this is a good place to look. Driver: The Driver setting is near the upper-right corner of the Setup window. For PCI, on-board, and USB sound hardware, this should be set to alsa. For FireWire audio interfaces, which don t use ALSA drivers, you should select freebob. The FreeBoB driver project is working on a second-generation FireWire audio driver called FFADO, so if your distribution is very up to date, you may see ffado listed in place of freebob. Interface: This setting in the right column dictates which audio hardware jackd uses. The first soundcard in your system is called hw:0 by ALSA. Don t leave this set to default, because performance isn t as good, due to the use of ALSA s plug layer. You may have an onboard chipset, a multichannel PCI card, and a USB sound device such as hot-plug headphones, in which case you have a total of three ALSA devices. Sometimes the audio chipset on a software modem shows up here as well. Fortunately, you can click the arrowhead to the right side of the Interface box and select the correct hardware from a drop-down list by its real name such as AMD8111, which is an on-board chipset. Audio: With this control, you can select Capture Only, Playback Only, or Duplex. The latter option means play back and capture at the same time, which you need to have for overdubs (recording a second track in time with the first, by ear). Duplex mode requires more throughput, so you can switch to Capture Only or Playback Only mode if your system is struggling to keep up.

With all these settings tweaked, click OK, and you return to the main JACK Control window. Click the Start button at upper left in the GUI, and the display lights up with information about the JACK server. If it stays dark, then the jackd daemon (background process) has failed to start, in which case you should look at the Messages pop-up window for a diagnosis. In the event that this information doesn t help you find the problem, you can go back to the Setup window and select the Verbose messages output check box, which should provide additional clues. The top line of output in the JACK Control display, in a yellow font, is most pertinent for now. The word Started indicates that jackd is running, and to the right of this you can see the letters RT if jackd is using real-time privileges. Going to the right again, you can see the DSP load figure as a percentage, which indicates how well jackd is coping. It s just over 1% in Figure 9-23 because not much audio processing is happening. If this figure approaches 100%, you re in trouble, because your system isn t capable of the task you re asking it to do. Because Ardour is efficient, you shouldn t see a high DSP load figure when making basic recordings unless your PC is antique.
