Next, select the track by clicking the background of its panel, next to the six small buttons; it turns purple. Select Track Height Largest from Ardour s main menu bar, which enables you to see the peaks of the recorded waveform in more detail. This detail is a great help when you edit individual tracks. Alternatively, choose Track Height Fit Selected Tracks to stretch the height of the tracks to fill the available space in the display (keyboard shortcut F, for fit). This option is particularly useful if you re making a detailed inspection of a track or tracks on a large, high-resolution display (see Figure 9-31).

If you don t have a drum kit, can t play one, or lack understanding neighbors, Free Software comes to your rescue again in the shape of Hydrogen. As you read in 8, this is a very flexible drum machine that can play samples of both acoustic and electronic kits. By default, Hydrogen auto-detects JACK on start-up, so recording from it is exactly the same as using a stereo pair of microphones on a real drum kit except that the port names are different. When you click the Input button and select Edit in the Ardour mixer with Hydrogen running, an extra tab visible lets you select Hydrogen s left and right outputs. Click the out_L connection in the Hydrogen-1 tab, and it appears in the in 1 box at left (the Ardour inputs side). Then, click the out_R connection so it appears in the in 2 box (see Figure 9-32). You can then hide the track input box with the Close button. Try some of Hydrogen s demo patterns and sampled drum kits until you get ideas for your own patterns.

To lock Hydrogen to Ardour s timeline, you can use the transport features in JACK. Just to the right of Ardour s clock is a small drop-down menu with the tooltip Positional sync source, which defaults to Internal. Change this setting to JACK, rewind to the start of the Ardour session, and click the play button. You should now hear the current Hydrogen pattern playing back in sync with the Ardour session, if you have a pattern loaded. Should you decide to dispense with the drums (real or machine programmed), Ardour has a handy click-track feature that can help you keep your timing. In the upper-right corner of the editor window is a group of six buttons, with the Click button at lower right. Activate this control, and the button turns light green to show that the click track has been enabled (see Figure 9-33). Press the rewind button (gray triangle and bar icon, furthest left on the transport controls), and then click the play button (gray triangle). You hear a 4/4 pattern of clicks (high, low, low, low), which sounds like a small child playing a xylophone.

Figure 9-33. The click track has been enabled, so the Click button lights up green. By default, this click track plays at 120 beats per minute. To change this setting, look at the area above the individual track button boxes, on the left side of the editor window. Horizontal gray Meter and Tempo strips with small red markers next to them appear below the Timecode strip. Right-click the marker in the Tempo strip, and select Edit (see Figure 9-34). When you change the tempo setting and click Apply, more than the marker changes: the faint vertical lines in the editor window shuffle along to reflect the new setting, because the tempo markers don t just control the click track they set timing for the entire session.
Figure 9-34. You can set any tempo you like, using the markers in the Tempo strip. The same goes for the Meter setting; but for most contemporary music tracks, 4/4 time is fine. If you re using obscure time signatures, then you may be playing progressive jazz rock fusion beware. There s no need to play at the same tempo or use the same meter throughout the session; right-click in the appropriate horizontal strip beneath the timeline at the point where you want to place another marker, and select New Tempo or New Meter (see Figure 9-35). Press the play button again, and listen for the change in the click track as the play cursor passes each marker.
