Usually, you have to select one of these options using the cursor keys on your keyboard or the Page Up and Page Down keys. Make sure CD or similar is at the beginning of the priority list you select. This applies even if you have a DVD drive as far as the BIOS is concerned, booting from a CD or a DVD is pretty much the same thing. If you ve changed this setting, you must press another key to save the new value to the BIOS memory chip on your motherboard. This may be one of the F keys, indicated by Save to CMOS and Exit or some such phrase.

Now you re ready to put the Ubuntu disk in your CD or DVD drive, and reboot the PC. After you see the usual power-on screen, the optical drive should start to spin the CD. Sometimes, the BIOS displays the message Booting from CD-ROM. A couple of seconds pass, and an Ubuntu welcome screen appears. You have the option to select a language at this stage; if you do nothing, the default of English is selected automatically after 30 seconds. Or you can choose a different language and then select Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer. In the next step, an orange progress bar moves across the screen as Ubuntu boots. This takes a minute or two, depending on the speed of your PC. If your sound card is detected automatically, which should be the case for most common audio hardware, and your PC s loudspeakers are switched on, you now hear the Ubuntu start-up sound. (I think it s meant to sound like a choir plus a couple of xylophone players, but you can be the judge of that.) Shortly afterward, the Ubuntu live desktop appears (see Figure 2-1). The software isn t installed on the hard disk of your computer yet, so if you ve jumped a step ahead, it s not too late to go back to the beginning of this chapter and reread the warning about backups!

The live desktop is a fully functional operating system, even though it s running from a CD. It s a bit slower than an installed Ubuntu system, and no user accounts are set up yet, but the live system lets you confirm that your hardware is supported by GNU/Linux drivers.

automatically detected and configured properly. It should still be possible for you to run Ubuntu on this PC, but you may have to do a little more work to get it running right. The best approach in this situation is to research which piece of hardware is causing the trouble, by searching the Web. Most likely, another person has run into the same problem with Ubuntu on this particular model of computer. If you enter ubuntu plus the model number of your PC or laptop into any good search engine, you re likely to find the answer to your problem. If an error message appears on the screen, enter that into the search engine, too.
Ubuntu Desktop installation
If you ve made that backup and you re ready to proceed with the Ubuntu installation, double-click the Install icon at upper left on the desktop. A Welcome window appears, which gives you a second chance to select your native language again, the default is English (see Figure 2-2). Whichever language you choose here will be the default language of the installed system, but you can easily add more languages later.
