After Kino starts, click the Capture tab at right in the GUI. If a tape with a recording on it is loaded in the camera, you should see some video in Kino s main window. Kino has transport remote controls that allow you to rewind, fast forward, and otherwise manipulate the camcorder tape, so you shouldn t need to touch the camera during the capture process. Before you click the Capture button below the main viewing window, choose Edit Preferences and click the Capture tab. Specify the file type you require; in this case, click the Raw DV radio button (see Figure 11-17). The DV AVI Type 2 option is said to provide better compatibility with Windows videoediting applications.

Figure 11-17. Set Kino s preferences before you attempt your first video capture. It s a good idea to check the Auto Split Files box, which gives you a separate DV file for each continuous shot on the camcorder (not the same thing as a separate file for each still frame). In a dragand-drop environment, it s much easier to make editing decisions about individual shots than about long, unbroken files. Personally, I also set the Put Timestamp in File Name option, because it makes it much more practical to manage a large number of individual files. If the clock is set correctly on your camcorder, each DV filename is then tagged with the date and time of the original shot. If you click the Capture button and all goes well, the directory specified in the Capture tab of Kino s preferences dialog begins filling with DV files. Note that the process happens in real time, so a standard 60-minute MiniDV tape takes an hour to capture. You need around 13GB of hard disk space for each 60 minutes of DV captured. It s well worth checking out Kino s editing, effects, and export features, because it may have all you need to prepare a simple YouTube-style video. A comprehensive user manual is available at www.kinodv.org/docbook/.

If you don t need Kino s features, and you just want to get the video off the camera with as little fuss as possible, you can use the dvgrab (GNU/Linux) utility on the command line. The dvgrab source code is available via the Kino web site; like its sister project, there should be a binary package available for your GNU/Linux distro. Ubuntu users can install dvgrab using the Synaptic package manager. The dvgrab package has a man page (type man dvgrab into a terminal after installation) that details all of the program s parameters. For instance, you can use dvgrab with the following options: dvgrab --autosplit --format dv2 --size 0 --opendml my_videofileThe last part of the command, my_videofile-, is the prefix given to each sequentially numbered DV file captured from the camera tape.

Open Movie Editor (GNU/Linux; www.openmovieeditor.org) features a drag-and-drop, timeline-based interface that will be familiar to users of other video-editing applications. It also has support for the JACK sound server and, crucially, JACK s transport control. This means that when you use Open Movie Editor, you can synchronize sound from other JACK transport-aware apps, like Ardour, without having to render the audio or video first; this is potentially a killer feature for soundtrack production. On the downside, Open Movie Editor can be laborious to install from source code, is sometimes quirky, and currently offers a limited range of rendering presets. At least, because it s a nonlinear editor, one that records edit decisions rather than mangle the input files, there s little chance of damaging your original video material when it does crash. Usually, you can restart Open Movie Editor and be right back at the point before the crashing bug was triggered. I hope the application gets the attention it deserves and the lone developer, Richard Spindler, gets the community help he needs to make Open Movie Editor stable and practical for everyday use. You spend the rest of this chapter looking at the application, so you can find out what working with bleeding-edge Free Software is like. Ubuntu users can install Open Movie Editor using the Add/Remove Applications tool. Optionally, you can also install the Frei0r video effect plug-ins (GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac; www.piksel.org/frei0r), which are supported by Open Movie Editor and several other Free Software video applications. (That s a zero after the letter i, by the way, not an O knowing this should help you find information about Frei0r on search engines.) In Ubuntu, you can install the frei0r-plugins and frei0r-plugins-doc packages using Synaptic. Before running Open Movie Editor for the first time, you need to make sure you have the JACK sound server installed and working. Fortunately, the jackd daemon and its qjackctl applet (often labeled Jack Control) are available ready-packaged for most GNU/Linux distros and should be installed by default on any multimedia-specific distro. If you ve skipped ahead in this book and haven t run JACK yet, refer back to s 9 and 10 for JACK installation and configuration tips. 48000Hz is the most likely audio sample rate for a video project, so set JACK to run at that rate unless you know otherwise. If you have JACK installed but it isn t running when you start Open Movie Editor, the application starts JACK by itself. In this case, you can still open JACK Control after the fact to check on settings and connections.
