format. Typically, these packages are divided into sections according to their perceived importance, and Ubuntu is no exception. In the Add/Remove Applications tool, you can select All Open Source applications or Canonical-maintained applications from a drop-down list. (Canonical is the commercial organization that produces the Ubuntu distribution.) In Ubuntu, the section of applications maintained by Canonical is known as main, and the section of packages maintained by the wider Free Software community is known as universe. Many of the best creative applications for GNU/Linux are in the Ubuntu universe repository. There is also a section called restricted that contains the Canonical supported but non Free Software packages available for Ubuntu, and a section known as multiverse for non Free Software packages without Canonical support. One package you re likely to need from the multiverse section is flashplugin-installer, which downloads Adobe s proprietary Flash plug-in for Firefox and other browsers. Many contemporary websites won t work without it. Although Free Software alternatives to the plug-in are under development by the Gnash and Swfdec projects, for now at least, Adobe s plug-in remains the most functional choice for multimedia websites like YouTube and MySpace. See www.gnu.org/software/gnash/ for more details about Gnash. To locate the package you re interested in, either browse the categories at left in the Add/Remove Applications window or type a search term into the box at upper right. The search tool can find packages by their description, so you don t need to know the exact name of the software in question to locate it. Then, check the box next to the package name, and click the Apply Changes button at lower right (see Figure 2-33).

Occasionally, this program prompts you to update the list of packages available, which you can do with a single click (as long as the machine is connected to the Internet); see Figure 2-34.

Figure 2-34. Ubuntu needs to refresh its list of packages to check for critical updates. Refreshing this list of packages often causes Ubuntu s Update Manager to begin working in the upper-right corner of the GNOME desktop. As you saw earlier, an orange burst icon appears, and it s important not to ignore this. In addition to critical bug fixes, Update Manager downloads security fixes that help keep your PC and data safe when you use the Internet. GNU/Linux has a pretty solid security record so far, with almost zero virus or spyware activity but as the Free Software platform becomes ever more widespread, that may not always be the case. It s best not to put off downloading the package updates for too long, unless you re right in the middle of an important project. If you ve just installed Ubuntu for the first time, there are likely to be a large number of packages that have been updated since the release of that version (see Figure 2-35). After this major update, it should settle down to just a few packages per day.

When an update has completed, sometimes a new Linux kernel has been installed. This is one of the few times when a GNU/Linux machine must be powered down and restarted, because nearly all other updates can be made on the fly (see Figure 2-36). If this is the case, then Update Manager prompts you to reboot the PC.
Figure 2-36. Update Manager lets you know if the machine has to be rebooted, but this is comparatively rare with GNU/Linux.
