skin background that is exactly the width of your display, if you want to work in full-screen mode all the time. Even then, you must allow some space, about 25 pixels, for Mixxx s top menu bar. The background PNG file provides all the static elements of the GUI, including borders between sections and the labels for controls. The x,y positions of the knobs and sliders, their tool tips, and the sizes of adjustable elements are specified in the skin.xml file like so: <Tooltip>Playback rate factor</Tooltip> <Channel>1</Channel> <Pos>50,210</Pos> <Size>47,16</Size> Creating the skin background in the GIMP allows you to use the multilayered XCF file format; making small adjustments to static elements is much less tedious if you put each element on its own layer. You can then export the background to a flat, single-layered PNG file for use in your custom Mixxx skin (see Figure 8-12). Using a combination of screenshots of Mixxx and the GIMP s measurement tool helps you to get the dimensions right.

When you ve had fun playing other people s music, you can move on to creating some of your own. For all kinds of dance music and any other kind that s meant to be mixed live by a DJ, a steady beat is essential; otherwise, beat matching is near impossible. Even for acoustic music, a computer can often be useful for creating drum tracks, because a programmed beat works like a metronome to keep the tempo

steady. On top of that, a real drum kit takes up space and upsets the neighbors. If you re lucky enough to have access to a real drum kit, and your neighbors don t care, then you may find that learning drummachine programming informs your own playing style. It used to be that a drum machine was a separate piece of hardware, but even an old PC is more than capable of emulating the very simple computers found in the classic beat boxes of the 1980s and 90s. Several Free Software drum machines are available, but perhaps the most developed is Hydrogen (GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac). Although this is now a cross-platform application, it was originally developed for GNU/Linux, so that version is the most mature. Windows and Mac installers are available from www.hydrogen-music.org but are currently considered experimental. In Ubuntu, you can install Hydrogen using the Add/Remove Applications tool; packages are also available in many other GNU/Linux distros. When you open Hydrogen from the Applications Sound & Video menu in Ubuntu, a welcome dialog box provides some details about the current version of the program. When you close the welcome dialog, Hydrogen fills most of the screen with its main window (see Figure 8-13). Inside this, three floating subwindows are visible: a song editor, a pattern editor, and a mixer. At the top of the main window is a conventional menu bar, and at the bottom are fixed panels for time, mode, tempo, and indicator lights. Each floating window can be resized, minimized, maximized, or hidden using the items on the View menu. This menu includes two floating windows that aren t shown by default the drumkit manager and the instrument editor. You look at those later.

CHAPTER 8 MAKING MUSIC
The Pattern editor subwindow is a good place to start experimenting with Hydrogen. Unlike its chemical namesake, this drum machine won t literally explode and burn down your house, although it may burn up the dance floor. Down the left side of this subwindow is a list of the various components of the current drum kit, with an empty four-beat timeline in the main part of the window. If you click Snare Rock or Hand Clap in this window, you should hear the corresponding sound from your computer s speakers or headphones. If not, check the settings on the Audio System tab under File Preferences. Using the default of Auto for the Audio driver setting is recommended for now. Each pattern represents a single bar of music, which could be the drum part for a verse, a chorus, or a fill. (A drum fill is the tricky bit that a drummer lays on top of the basic beat, often at the introduction to a song or to emphasize a change in pattern). Along the top of the pattern editor are various boxes that let you alter different parameters of the current pattern. The first box allows you to cycle through the pattern numbers used in the song editor; the pattern name in the second box changes accordingly. The Size box lets you choose the pattern length in eighth notes; the default setting of 8 gives you a conventional time signature of 4/4, used for almost all house and techno music and most rock songs. Setting it to 7 gives you a 7/8 bar, setting it to 10 creates a 5/4 bar, and setting it to 16 creates a double 4/4 bar pattern, effectively. The Resolution box affects the quantization the number of playable beats in the bar expressed as note-length values. If you choose 16, this lets sixteenth notes be played. It s also possible to select triplet quantization, so 16T divides a 4-beat bar into 24. The late John Bonham was able to play triplets on a single bass drum, fact fans, but most drummers aren t that talented. This time signature and quantization stuff will be familiar to anyone who has learned to read sheet music, but DJs, producers, and musicians who play by ear may be new to it. Nevertheless, it s important in the creation of more complex rhythms. The last panel in the pattern editor is the Recording panel. There are two ways to record into Hydrogen: in real time or with the mouse. For real-time work you probably need all three buttons engaged Hear New Notes, Record Keyboard/MIDI Events, and Quantize Keyboard/MIDI Events to Grid. If you don t have a MIDI piano keyboard or drum kit attached to your computer, you can use the keys of your QWERTY keyboard to trigger the notes. With the Record button enabled at least, click the Play/Pause button in the lower panel, to the right of the time clock (keyboard shortcut space bar). A black triangle cursor zips along the beat numbers at the top of the Pattern editor subwindow. Now, try pressing the Z, X, and C keys, and you hear sounds and see black diamonds representing the notes added to the pattern. If you re entering notes using the mouse, then you don t need the Record button activated (see Figure 8-14). Click the horizontal line for each part of the drum kit for example, Snare Rock at the position on the grid of the beat number that you require. You can remove individual notes by clicking them. You can also use mouse editing to correct a pattern that has been triggered in real time without having to record the whole pattern again.
