If you re already bored with Hydrogen s default drum sounds, you ll be pleased to know that a number of extra ready-made drum kits are available. In Ubuntu, use Synaptic to install the hydrogen-drumkits package, and then restart Hydrogen. Select View Show drumkit manager, and look at the alternative kits available on the Load tab (see Figure 8-18). Alternatively, visit the download page on the Hydrogen web site for links to individual kits, which you can install using the Import tab of the Drumkit manager subwindow.

Figure 8-18. Choose an alternative kit of drum sounds in Hydrogen s drumkit manager. By selecting a kit name and clicking the Load drumkit button, you can load the new kits while the song is playing, which enables you to easily preview the different sounds. The drum kits available for Hydrogen vary widely in sound, from samples of real acoustic kits to entirely synthesized bleeps and breaks, and can strongly affect the final feel of the track. For more fine-grained control of the sounds, Hydrogen provides the facility to edit the individual components of the kit, via View Show instrument editor. This small window displays detailed controls for the instrument that is currently selected in the pattern editor. Using this interface, you can create a custom drum kit with up to 32 samples and 16 velocity layers for each sample (see Figure 8-19). These layers are required for accurate simulation of an acoustic kit because real drums change sound depending on how hard you hit them. You can also adjust the envelope of the sound, or add filter and pitch effects for each instrument in the kit.

Figure 8-19. Hydrogen s instrument editor lets you tweak ready-made kits or create completely new, multilayered kits. Next, you can add more effects to give the track some atmosphere. This type of effect is controlled via the Mixer subwindow. The main part of this window is laid out similarly to an analog sound mixer that you might find in a recording studio or live venue. Each component of the drum kit gets its own mixer strip, with controls to preview, mute, solo, and pan the sound; four rotary knobs to control effects (FX) level, and a vertical fader for the output level (see Figure 8-20).

CHAPTER 8 MAKING MUSIC
Some interesting controls are in the mixer s right panel. Next to the Master Fader, which controls the overall output volume, are the Humanize functions, which you can use to add a touch of realism to Hydrogen s output (see Figure 8-21). These three knobs make it possible to adjust the influence of a random factor on the velocity and timing of each note played, and also to specify a swing factor the amount of bounce applied to the rhythm. This can be essential for some jazz, reggae, and hip-hop feels. Careful use of these controls can really bring a drum track alive and make it sound almost organic.
Figure 8-21. The Humanize controls allow for a more natural feel than the robotic beat that drum machines are typically known for. Below the Humanize knobs are two buttons: the top one toggles the peak level meters on and off, and the lower one opens the FX panel. Here you can have some fun with the four effects channels available to you. Click the Edit button for the first channel at the top, labeled No plugin by default. Doing so opens a plug-in properties window for that channel. Next, click the Select FX button, which brings up a further selection window with all the plug-ins installed on the system listed in the left-hand window. Hydrogen supports plug-ins in LADSPA format, which is the standard for audio effects on GNU/Linux. Ubuntu doesn t install any LADSPA plug-ins by default, but you can find hundreds by searching for ladspa in Synaptic Package Manager. If you install the swh-plugins, tap-plugins, and caps packages, that will get you off to a good start. With the plug-ins installed, restart Hydrogen, and open the Select LADSPA FX window again. Plugins are listed by category, such as distortions, reverbs, and flangers (see Figure 8-22).
