Tether is a popular option here and now works for both Windows and Mac computers. Check out their site at www.tether.com. (Figure 28-1) The bonus claimed by Tether is that you do not need to pay for a separate modem plan from your carrier and you may be able to save a lot on monthly connection charges. Cost for Tether was about USD $30 at publishing time, but they offer a 7-day free trial so you can give it a try before you buy.

Option 2: Use Your Wireless Carrier s Software
Contact your wireless carrier s technical support to find out if they offer software and service plans for this option. Tell them you want to use your BlackBerry as a modem for your laptop. AT&T (USA), Sprint/Nextel (USA), and Verizon (USA) have simple software (such as Communication Manager or Verizon Access Manager) that you can download and install.
Option 3: Use Desktop Manager to Connect to the Internet
This works for both Windows and Mac computers. Windows computer users see the following section. Mac users, skip ahead to the section called Using Desktop Manager for Mac.
CHAPTER 28: Connect as Tethered Modem
Using Desktop Manager for Windows
If you have confirmed with your carrier that you can use the IP Modem feature in BlackBerry Desktop Manager (Figure 28-2,) then follow the steps shown here. Learn how to download and install Desktop Manager for Windows on page 67. 1. Start Desktop Manager by going to Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Figure 28-2. Configure IP modem in Desktop Manager for Windows.
Click on the IP Modem icon. (If you don t see this icon, then you will need to confirm with your carrier that you can use it. Sometimes, you can re-enable this icon by editing a specific file see page 22.) Configure the IP Modem by clicking the Configure button, as shown in Figure 28-3.
CHAPTER 27: Connect as Tethered Modem
Figure 28-3. Click Configure in connection settings
Now, try the drop-down list next to Connection Profile to see if your carrier is listed (Figure 28-4).
Figure 28-4. Look for your carrier in the drop-down menu
If not, then select Add Custom Profile and follow the steps to enter the information. Most likely, you will need to contact your wireless carrier for the setup information.
CHAPTER 28: Connect as Tethered Modem
Make sure to check the box at the bottom of the Set Up Connection screen if you want your Internet connection to remain active even after you close out of Desktop Manager. Click OK and save your settings. Make sure your BlackBerry is connected to your computer and recognized by Desktop Manager. You can tell if Desktop Manager sees your BlackBerry by looking in the lower left corner.
Now, you are ready to connect.
Click the Connect button. If you see any error messages, follow the directions or contact your wireless carrier for setup assistance.
For help, also consider visiting the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Base (see page 543). Or, you can ask your question at one of the BlackBerry user forums such as www.crackberry.com, www.pinstack.com, or www.blackberryforums.com.
How to Re-Enable the IP Modem Icon Inside Desktop Manager for Windows
Before you follow these steps, you should be sure to contact your carrier to see if you can use Desktop Manager s IP Modem feature. If their answer is yes, then follow these steps to edit this file: ip_modem_configuration.xml. If your carrier says no, then following these steps will likely not work; in that case, use the software recommended by your carrier. 1. 2. 3. Open the file using a text-only editor, such as Windows Notepad or WordPad. Locate your wireless carrier name. Take note that carrier names with ampersands such as AT&T will be listed as AT&T Change the enabled="false" to enabled="true" as shown in Figure 28-5.
