Your BlackBerry comes with a built-in spelling checker. Normally, your spelling checker is turned on to check everything you type. The little dotted underlining while you type things on your BlackBerry goes away when the spelling checker matches your words with those in the dictionary. Normally, you will need to turn it on to have it check your outgoing e-mail messages. When your spelling mistakes are not auto-corrected with the AutoText feature (see page 22), the other way to quickly correct many typing errors is to use the built-in spelling checker on your BlackBerry. When your BlackBerry finds what it thinks is a misspelled word, it will underline it, as shown in Figure 6-4.

Custom Spelling Dictionary
You will quickly find out that you need to add or delete words in your custom dictionary (e.g., a name or other unique word that is spelled correctly but not in the default standard dictionary).
Adding Words to the Spelling Custom Dictionary
Sometimes, you might use unique words (e.g., local place names) in your e-mail messages that are not found in the standard dictionary. One of the options offered to you is to add the word to your own unique custom dictionary. The advantages of this are (1) that you will never again be asked to replace that word with something suggested and (2) if you misspell this custom word, you will be given the correct spelling. To add a new word, follow these steps, as shown in Figure 6-6. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. During the spell checking process, the spell check program will notice a word that it believes is misspelled. In this example, we are using Flagler, a county in Florida, which is not in the standard dictionary. You will see that the spelling checker suggests options for replacing the word, none of which are correct. Press the Menu key. Click Add to Dictionary to add the word to your own custom dictionary.
CHAPTER 6: Typing, Spelling, and Help
TIP: You may also see Cancel Spell Check. You can use this to end the spell check without verifying the rest of the document.

Figure 6-6. Adding new words to your custom dictionary
Next time we spell Flagler, it will not be shown as misspelled. What s even better is that next time we misspell Flagler (e.g., Flaglr), the spelling checker will find it and give us the correct spelling.
Edit or Delete Words from the Spelling Custom Dictionary
Mistakes will happen, and it s fairly easy to click the wrong menu item and inadvertently add wrong words to the custom dictionary. The authors have done this plenty of times!
