TIP: Knowing AutoText is there helping you get things right will allow you to type with greater abandon on your BlackBerry. Take a few minutes to browse the AutoText pre-loaded entries, especially the the contractions, so you can learn to type them without ever using the apostrophe. You can also use AutoText for more advanced things like automatically typing an e-mail signature (Page 22), driving directions, a canned e-mail message, routine text describing your products or services, legal disclaimer text, or anything!

You can get into the AutoText list from the Edit AutoText menu item when you are typing an e-mail message (by pressing the Menu key) or from the main Options icon. To create a new entry, follow these steps. 1. 2. Click your Options icon. Click AutoText to see the list of entries.
TIP: Learn the contractions to save you time as you type future e-mail messages. (Skip typing the apostrophe.)
Type the new entry you want to add (in this case dirh for Directions to home) and make sure you see no entries that exactly match.

Just hit the Enter key to start adding your new entry.
Glide down under the With field and type the text you want to appear when you type your new AutoText word dirh.
Press the Menu key and select Save. TIP: Type these directions on your computer and e-mail them to yourself, then copy/paste them into AutoText from the e-mail message.

Now when someone wants directions, all you have to do is type your new AutoText entry, dirh
After pressing the Space key, the full directions appear from your new AutoText entry.

Advanced AutoText Features: Macros Time Stamp
With AutoText, you can actually insert macros or shortcuts for other functions, such as displaying the current time and date, your PIN number, or owner information, or even simulating pressing the Backspace or Delete keys.
Creating a New Entry with Macros
Let s create the new entry called ts ( Time Stamp ) that will instantly show the current time and date.
Start creating a new entry as you did previously, and use the letters ts for time stamp. Press the Menu key and select Insert Macro. TIP: All macros start with the percent sign (%), and you could simply type them instead of selecting them from the menu.
Scroll up or down and select the macro you want. In this case, we want Short Date (%d), which is mm/dd/yy format.
Type a space, - , and then a space again. Now press the Menu key and select Short Time (%t).

More with AutoText Macros
Now whenever you want to put the current date and time, just type your new entry, ts, and press Space.

Edit or Delete an AutoText Entry
Sometimes you may need to edit or remove an AutoText entry. The steps to get this done are very similar to creating a new one. Return to the AutoText list by selecting Edit AutoText while typing an e-mail message or from the Options icon. Type a few letters to find the AutoText entry. Press the Menu key and select Edit or Delete.
