your boards. You can generally specify how many you want and how soon you want to get them back. Typically one week is the breaking point. The sooner you want the part, the more it will cost you. Much longer than a week and the price drop is not substantial. If you ve chosen to go more high end and use a professional tool, then you ll need to make sure that your design files are in the correct format for your PCB vendor. Once you ve finished the PCB design part of the process you ll perform a design rules check (DRC) to make sure you haven t misconnected something or any other type of logical or wiring error. In addition, the PCB design will be checked for manufacturability. The board layout will be tested for things like two traces being too close together, vias being too close, pads for soldering too small, and a host of other errors. Here s the kicker; you have to set those rules. Because you chose to use a generic toolset, it doesn t know what vendor you will be using, unlike a tool supplied by a specific PCB manufacturer. Before you can generate any files used to manufacture your board, you ll have to setup the rules of the system in accordance with the capabilities of your vendor. Some vendors may only be able to do a certain width of board while others can go much thinner. Some can do very fine pitch (distance between pins) parts and others can t. Are those vendor specific, free tools starting to look more appealing yet The essence of the process is to create a set of computer aided manufacturing (CAM) files that you ll email to your vendor to create the board. You ll hear these referred to as Gerber files, which is the name used by a specific format of file. There are several files created: one for each layer, one for each of the top and bottom layer s silkscreens, a drill hole file, and so on. Your PCB vendor will specify which files and in what specific format they need to manufacture your board. Some vendors have a file compatibility Web link to which you can upload your files to see if they ll work for that vendor. While there are hundreds of PCB vendors out there, the correct choice is one that you re comfortable working with. Most vendors offer design testing before manufacturer and will contact you if anything looks like it might cause a problem. Many offer design support services such as helping with creating a footprint for a specific component. I used this service for my initial board design. The PIC16F690 microcontroller is a QFN 20-pin package with a center pad to dissipate heat. In my haste to create the footprint, I made the center pad and pin pads too close which would create shorts when the part was placed on the board. My vendor helped me to find this issue and correct it preventing costly rework later on. Another thing you ll want to consider is the assembly capability of your PCB vendor. Trust me, you ll want someone else assembling these tiny parts onto your board. Though you can find some QFN soldering techniques spread here and there throughout the Web, let the professionals handle it. If it isn t obvious yet, you re going to want to order more than one board. The question of how many to order is a tough one. There used to be a commercial about a laxative and comparing it to the homeopathic effect of prunes. At that time this was the 1960s most families, especially in rural regions, used prunes as a laxative. The concept
