That s about it for integration and testing. Like I said, most of your work is the battle between your firmware and the iPhone OS. You won t even need any App code (Xcode) at this point. How long will this take It s totally up to how you deal with these kinds of problems and how much time you have available. Generally, getting from a completed board with the initial firmware downloaded to the point where your board completes its startup and handshaking sequence with an iPhone will take a week or longer. Give yourself a month if you re doing it part-time. The good news is, once you re done with it, the code is reusable.

An accessory can be considered to be composed of: (1) a processor, (2) a connector to communicate with the iPhone device, and (3) other support logic. Although there may seem like a lot of processor options, it s really going to come down to some type of low-power embedded microcontroller such as the ARM 32-bit RISC, the TI MSP430 or C2000, or a Microchip PIC controller. There is no one best answer. It s a trade off of price, tool selection, power consumption, physical dimensions, capability, resources, and many others. For each type of processor, there will be evaluation boards with prototyping areas available at a reasonable cost. Select one or two that you think you ll feel comfortable with, try them out, and then make your selection. I ve described the accessory hardware design process as six basic steps: (1) parts selection, (2) prototyping, (3) circuit design, (4) PCB design, (5) board fabrication, and (6) integration and testing. If you break your process down into these measurable steps, the entire adventure won t seem as daunting as it might otherwise.

Just like the last chapter on hardware, a complete tutorial on firmware design would need a book (or several books) to itself. Even then, many would tell you that good firmware design takes more than recipes from a book; it s part art. What I m going to do here is to give you practical tips based on my own experience. As I discussed in chapter 4, firmware defines the program that you ll be writing and installing into your embedded processor. It s nothing magical or mysterious, just software like any other you write. Well, mostly. You ll need to take a step back from the protective world that Objective-C provides and handle most everything in your own code. In most cases there won t be any operating system support; if you need something, you ll most likely have to write it yourself. Your first inclination might be to write your programs using the processor s native machine or assembly language. The part s spec sheets usually contain a lot of examples written this way leading the new developer to believe that s the way to go. In all but the most extreme cases, it s not. Learning the nuances of a processor take weeks even for the most savvy and embedded designers. If you haven t had a lot (or any) experience working at this level, then you might be in for a couple months of study. Remember the bigger picture; this is about your accessory and not the details of one piece of the puzzle. Don t get bogged down in the details unless this is more about the learning experience.
