After you ve configured the Upload module as described in the previous section, it s ready to use. Create or edit a node that can have attachments, and you will see an extra group of fields titled File Attachments at the bottom of the form. To attach a file to the node, first locate the file on your local machine by either entering the path in the Attach New File field or by using the Browse button. Once you ve selected the desired file, click the Attach button. The file will be uploaded to the server via HTTP and, if successful, you will be shown the same form with the attachment listed in a table, as shown in the example in Figure 3-9. You may repeat this process as often as you like, and thus attach multiple files to one node.

Caution The uploaded files are not permanently attached to a node until you click the Submit button.

After uploading files as attachments to a node, you must click the Submit button and save the node. Failing to do this will result in the attachments being lost. To delete an attachment from a node, check the box in the Delete column next to the desired file and click Submit. The file will be removed from the node and deleted from the server. The check boxes in the List column control whether a given uploaded file will be visible when the content is being displayed. Most of the time, you will want uploaded files to be visible, thus the box is checked by default. However, in some cases, you will not want the uploaded files to be visible. For example, if you are using the contributed Inline module (http://drupal.org/ project/inline) to display links to the files within the text of your post, you may not want the link to show again below the post.

Drupal s built-in support for the RSS version 2.0 standard, including file enclosures, makes it an ideal platform for staging podcasts. The first file attachment of any node will show up in the RSS feed as an enclosure, meaning feed reader and podcasting software configured to do so will automatically download the file. Drupal supports podcasting out of the box!

Required by Drupal, the Watchdog module is always activated. It is responsible for the admin/ logs page, which you can see by clicking administer. The main configuration option available for these logs is the Discard Log field on the general settings screen. As discussed in 2, you will want to be aware of how large the Watchdog table is and adjust this setting accordingly, so that you keep only as much log information as is useful to you.

Caution The size of the Watchdog table in the database can have a significant influence on the performance of your Drupal site. Do not keep logs any longer than is necessary.

Summary

The Drupal core modules cover a wide range of basic functionality, from advanced user profiles to statistics collection. Many types of web sites can be completely served with only the modules delivered with the standard Drupal download. Core modules can all be activated or deactivated without downloading other packages or adding extra database tables. Drupal would be only a fraction as popular as it is, though, without the contributed modules. A quick look at the available module downloads (http://drupal.org/project/Modules) reveals the diverse range of contributed modules available. At the time of this writing, 120 contributed modules are available, with the number growing every week. The reason for the enormous number of modules is Drupal s highly extensible architecture and accessible programmer s API.
