The Visual Web Developer Toolbox The Standard controls can be classified into a group that you will use most often, enabling the end user to choose an option or provide a mechanism in which a specific event will occur. To be more specific, these server controls are named Label, TextBox, Button, LinkButton, ImageButton, Hyperlink, DropDownList, ListBox, CheckBox, CheckBoxList, RadioButton, RadioButtonList, Image, ImageMap, Table, BulletedList, HiddenField, Literal, Calendar, AdRotator, FileUpload, Wizard, Xml, MultiView and View, Panel, PlaceHolder, and Substitution. We ll briefly discuss the server controls included in the Standard group in the sections that follow, and then we ll move on to present an exercise (Exercise 4-1) that will show many of the controls in action and working together.

The Button control is used to initiate some type of action. When the button is clicked, the web page that it is placed on posts back to the server.
LinkButton
The LinkButton control is the same as the Button control except that instead of seeing a rectangular object on the web page, the LinkButton resembles a hyperlink. This is best used when a hyperlink needs to be displayed visually but a post back to the server is also desirable.
ImageButton
The ImageButton control is also the same as the Button and LinkButton; however, the button will display an image that is set from the control s property.
HyperLink
The HyperLink control allows navigation from one web page to another.
DropDownList
The DropDownList control provides the end user with a defined set of options from which to select, where only one selection can be made at a given time.
ListBox
The ListBox control is similar to the DropDownList control, where the end user can make a selection, but it also allows for selecting multiple items.
CheckBox
The CheckBox control accepts input in the form of a Boolean value or, in other words, true or false.
CHAPTER 4 SERVER CONTROLS
CheckBoxList
The CheckBoxList provides the end user with a series of check boxes and allows for multiple selections.
RadioButton
The RadioButton control is used within a series or group of RadioButton controls and is designed to allow the end user to only select one of the choices.
RadioButtonList
The RadioButtonList control provides a series of RadioButton controls at runtime. However, it still is designed for situations where only one selection is permitted by the end user.
Image
The Image control is used to display a defined image on a web page by specifying the ImageURL property of the control.
ImageMap
The ImageMap control is used when one image has defined regions or hot spot areas. When these defined regions are selected or clicked, a post back to the server occurs, and navigation to a specific URL can be performed.
Table
The Table control builds an HTML table programmatically by adding TableRows to the Rows collection of the table and TableCells to the Cells collection of the row.
BulletedList
The BulletedList control is used to show a list of items that are formatted with a bullet in front of each.
HiddenField
The HiddenField control is used to store a value or object that needs to persist across web pages or post backs to the server. The value stored within a HiddenField is rendered as an element. Using this method to persist a value is an alternative to using ViewState or Session.
Literal
The Literal control is used to display text and apply styles when placed within a web page.
CHAPTER 4 SERVER CONTROLS
Calendar
The Calendar control displays the current month and allows the end user to navigate to past as well as future months and allows selection of a specific date.
