The Panel control is a container to hold other controls or content. It is useful when the desired effect is to hide the content and then make it visible again.
PlaceHolder
The PlaceHolder control is also used as a container to hold other controls or content but is best used to add other controls programmatically.
Substitution
The Substitution control is related to caching data within a web page. It allows content within a web page that is being cached to remain dynamic, in that the control and its string values are never cached.
CHAPTER 4 SERVER CONTROLS
Exercise 4-1. Working with the Standard Controls
The following example using the Standard controls will demonstrate how to retrieve the text property values from a TextBox and set the text property of a Label to that value along with adding an item to a DropDownList. 1. From the Toolbox, add a Label control named labelDisplay, a TextBox control named textDisplay, and finally a Button control named buttonCopy to the web page as shown in Figure 4-2.
Figure 4-2. Using the Standard controls 2. Double-click on the Button control to switch over to the code. Upon switching to the code view, you are going to set the text of the Label control to that of the TextBox control when the Button control is clicked. The following code will allow this to happen: Protected Sub buttonCopy_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles buttonCopy.Click labelDisplay.Text = textDisplay.Text End Sub
CHAPTER 4 SERVER CONTROLS
3. After entering the code, build and run the web project to test. Within the TextBox control, enter This is a test, and then click the Button control. You should now see that the text entered into the TextBox is copied to the Text property of the Label control as shown in Figure 4-3.
Figure 4-3. The Standard controls during runtime We have just examined a simple demonstration of the Standard controls and used three different types. Let s take our example and expand on it by utilizing some additional Standard controls. 4. Add a DropDownList control from the ToolBox to the web page and place it near the Label control. Name the DropDownList control dropdownlistDisplay and proceed to the code view. Keep the same code as in the previous example; however, comment the line of code that sets the text of the TextBox to the Label and add code to add the text from the TextBox to the DropDownList control. Protected Sub buttonCopy_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles buttonCopy.Click 'labelDisplay.Text = textDisplay.Text dropdownlistDisplay.Items.Add(textDisplay.Text) End Sub
CHAPTER 4 SERVER CONTROLS
The code that adds the text from the TextBox to the DropDownList control centers around the Items of the DropDownList in that the control consists of a collection of Items and includes a method called Add(). Therefore, the text entered within the TextBox control is added to the DropDownList control with the following code: dropdownlistDisplay.Items.Add(textDisplay.Text) Now that we have examined the Standard controls, let s move on to the next group of controls: the Data controls.
Data Controls
The controls that are grouped within the Data controls have a specific purpose: they are used to display data on a web page or more likely a series of data or results from a data store, such as a query from a database or even an XML file or stream. The Data controls consist of the GridView, DataList, DetailsView, FormView, Repeater, SqlDataSource, AccessDataSource, ObjectDataSource, XmlDataSource, and the SiteMapDataSource. After we briefly describe these controls, we present an exercise (Exercise 4-2) that shows some of the Data controls in action.
